In a highly anticipated interview on Friday, Bruce Jenner sat down with Diane Sawyer on 20/20 and revealed to viewers that he is "for all intents and purposes...a woman." It was a milestone moment in both Bruce's life and in the media in general: The former Olympian was given the opportunity to share his own story on his own terms. This marks a profoundly important reclaiming of his own narrative, which can only be a positive thing, considering that this is, after all, his story to tell — not his to respond to the tabloid interpretation of. Plus, the media hasn't always dealt with personal matters like gender identity and sexual orientation in a respectful fashion. After the interview aired, some members of the Kardashian family spoke out about in response to Bruce's brave admission, including Bruce's youngest daughter, Kylie Jenner, who subtly showed her support during Bruce Jenner's interview on Friday. Kylie retweeted a message from Lady Gaga, which reads, simply, "Now that is bravery. <3"
(Update: During the 20/20 special, a statement from Kylie and her sister, Kendall Jenner, was released: "We love our dad very much. He has the biggest heart and all we want is for him to be happy. If he's happy, we're happy.")
(Update #2: During the 20/20 special, Kylie tweeted her support for Bruce in two tweets, stating, "Understandingly, this has been very hard for me. You will hear what I have to say when I'm ready to but..." she continued in another tweet, "..this isn't about me. I'm so proud of you, Dad. You are so brave. My beautiful Hero." Later, one more tweet: "All this positive feedback I'm reading! makes me so happy.")
Additionally, before the episode, Kylie posted a throwback photo of Bruce, captioned, "daddy throwback. #Tonight #DianeSawyer #ABC #love."
Considering Kylie has always been supportive of her father throughout all his family has been through, it's no surprise that her statement is one of support for Bruce in light of his decision to come out as transgender. The two have been known to have a close relationship, as depicted on the family's E! reality series Keeping Up With the Kardashians, and it's so good to see that Bruce has the backing of his family as he looks toward what will surely be a more empowered, exciting future.
As previously reported, Kim Kardashian stated that the family watched Bruce's 20/20 special together on Friday: "Yes, we will be all watching as a family tonight."
Editors Note: Per Jenner's stated preference, Bustle will continue referring to Jenner using he/his pronouns for the time being. We will follow his lead and make any changes to this policy as needed in the future.
