If you're a Grey's Anatomy fan, you've likely heard the news by now (unless you've been living under a WiFi-less rock, in which case, I urge you to sit down before you read this next, spoilerific sentence): Derek Shepherd died during Thursday's episode of Grey's Anatomy . For realsies — no fake-outs, cliffhangers, or miraculous, last minute life-saving procedures. Derek Shepherd is dead, and everything is terrible. While fans mourn the loss of McDreamy, however, it's possible that this piece of news might help console some, at least in some ways: Patrick Dempsey and Grey's Anatomy network ABC released statements on the shocker, and they're nothing short of emotional to read.
I urge you to grab the nearest box of tissues, or at least make sure you're sitting down when you read this. From TVLine , Dempsey's statement:
It’s been a remarkable ride... The worldwide impact has been extraordinary. It is incredible how devoted and passionate the fans are, and I will forever be grateful and humbled by the experience.
GUYS. No. This isn't happening, right? This is all a dream and I'm going to wake up and this episode won't have aired and Derek Shepherd will be just fine, right? Patrick Dempsey didn't really just use the words "it's been" in reference to his time on Grey's, right?!
... right?
ABC's statement, also via TVLine :
After 11 seasons on Grey’s Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey is moving on to pursue other interests. Dr. Derek Shepherd is an iconic character and we’ve been proud to be the home of ‘McDreamy’ and the ‘Mer/Der’ love story. The devotion of Grey’s fans throughout the years has been a testament to the creative mind of Shonda Rhimes and Dempsey’s talent. ‘McDreamy’ will be greatly missed and we wish Patrick the very best in his future endeavors.
If you'll excuse me, I'm now crying so much that I'm about to short my laptop's keyboard.
