Captain Kathryn Janeway isn't technically supposed to be a part of Starfleet until the 24th century, but either she has a time machine or we just found one of her proud ancestors. Get ready to nerd out, y'all, because Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti posted a Star Trek- themed selfie from space, dressed to the nines in her very own Starfleet uniform from Star Trek: The Voyager. Right now she's actually onboard the International Space Station, but today she is also onboard all of our devastatingly dorky fan hearts.
Cristoforetti posted the image on her personal Twitter account a few days ago with the caption, "'There's coffee in that nebula'... ehm, I mean... in that #Dragon." The actual "Dragon" she's referring to outside the space station window is the SpaceX Dragon freighter, which had arrived to deliver supplies. Unsurprisingly, of all the things on it, the first in-space coffeemaker was the one they were most excited about. This is truly a testament to how caffeine unites us all, no matter what nationality, region of space, or Starfleet rank you happen to be.
Most importantly: Is Cristoforetti getting good cell reception up there? I just need to make a quick call to make sure we can be best friends when she gets back down to Earth. Here's the tweet that pretty much burned down the entire Star Trek fandom with glee:
I think we all needed something to smile about, especially since fans are still mourning the recent passing of Leonard Nimoy, our Vulcan hero. (I honestly willfully forget that it happened for weeks at a time, and then am jarred back to sad reality.) That, and I feel like Kathryn Janeway doesn't get near enough appreciation in this fandom, so I'm gonna treat us all to the sassiest, most wonderful moments of Kathryn Janeway that the internet has to offer:
Janeway or the highway, y'all.
