I know this is going to feel like de ja vu. When Hilary Duff dyed her hair blue, she pretty much asked to be pitted against Kylie Jenner, leaving me to ask if it is Hilary or if it is Kylie who does blue hair better. Now that Hilary Duff has pink hair, even if she keeps the hue for only a minute, she is once again inviting comparison to other starlets and peers.
Since Kylie debuted (and quickly ditched) pink locks this weekend, she and Hil are going mano y mano — er, follicle y follicle — again!
But it's not just about how Hilary Duff's pink hair stacks up against Kylie Jenner's pink hair. There are so many "pink hair, don't care" moments in the celeb world, as it's a much more popular shade. Katy Perry often goes pink. So does Rita Ora. Kesha, who has been off the radar a bit after her rehab stint and her very ugly battles with Dr. Luke, likes to experiment with pink.
Now that Hilary Duff has entered the pink hair sweepstakes, opting for a mix of white blonde and hot pink that ends up looking ombre and beachy at once, I feel compelled to assess her take on pink locks by comparing her to others who have done the same.
There's Hil. It looks great on her. But she's about to have a showdown. Can. She. Hang?
1. Kylie Jenner
While Hil is hot pink and ombre, Kylie was cotton candy pink and it was clearly a wig. I've gotta give Duff the edge here, since Kylie's look felt super temporary.
2. Katy Perry
Katy Perry's hair is like rainbow, but she went with a rosy tint a few months back that felt more subdued than I am used to.
But she also fully committed to a glossy pink, too. Since Perry went all in, many times, I think her take on pink is stronger.
3. Rita Ora
Rita Ora is usually a platinum blonde, but she added an airy pink cast to her onetime bob, which I loved.
She also went with the dip-dye, which is more similar to Duff's style. Based on this version of Rita Ora doing pink, I like Hilary's better. It's less of a jarring contrast.
4. Kesha
Kesha's hair was bipolar, so she hit on two Kylie Jenner trends with one style. She couldn't commit.
Kesha's rainbow hair had a predominant pinkness. I like the multi-hued nature, but I think Duff's was more real girl and wearable.
5. January Jones
The Mad Men actress was super subtle with a few pink strands placed throughout. It wasn't a huge change, so I gotta credit Duff for making a bigger, stronger statement.
6. Nicki Minaj
Okay, Nicki Minaj pretty much took ownership of the color pink. It's hers and you really gotta work hard to try and usurp it from her. I love the long waves and the bangs, so she leapfrogged Duff in the "Who Does It Better?" war. Sorry, Hil!
7. Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato is another hair chameleon who has favored pink locks quite often. While this high and tight pony was severe, the pink enhancement mades it so memorable. Duff's pink 'do falls right in line here. It's a draw.
8. Helen Mirren
No one competes with Helen Mirren and her pink hair... ever.
9. Pink
Yes, it's Pink's name and her super pastel shade works with her vibe, skintone, and image. It's hard to compare her short pixie to Duff's long waves. So we'll stop there.
10. Avril Lavigne
Like so many other starlets, the pop punk princess mixed multiple colors with pink. Since Av is so punk rock, this is normal for her, but I like Duff's better since I can't co-sign green and pink.
11. Dakota Fanning
The actress with the saucer-sized eyes had just a touch of pink staining her locks and it was lovely, but it wasn't an all-in attempt like the one Duff made.
The conclusion I've come to is that Hilary Duff's pink hair is her very own take on the shade and style and while other celebs do it well, she looks pretty in pink, too!
