New Fritos Burritos Might Be Coming Your Way

by Lucia Peters

Heads up, Taco Bell fans: Two new Fritos burritos for the Taco Bell Dollar Cravings Menu might be on the way soon. Word on the street has it that the chain is testing out Chili Fritos Burritos and Cheesy Jalapeno Fritos Burritos in Michigan — so gird your loins, because I have a feeling this means more Fritos/Taco Bell hybrids might be waiting for us in the near future, too. Yea or nay? You be the judge!

These, of course, aren't the first Fritos burritos to make their way to the Taco Bell menu; the Beefy Fritos Burrito first dropped in 2014. Given Taco Bell's ongoing collaboration with PepsiCo — which, of course, resulted in the Doritos Locos Taco, also known as one of the most successful Taco Bell offerings of all time — it's perhaps unsurprising that more ideas starring Fritos are starting to see the light of day. I have as yet been able to determine exactly what's in each of these new burritos; from their names and the incredibly low-quality images of their menu pictures working their way around the web, however, I assume the Chili Fritos Burrito replaces the usual beef with some sort of chili-like concoction before peppering it with Fritos, while the Jalapeno Fritos Burrito comes with jalapeno slices scattered throughout. Do with that what you will.

Uh... whoops. Wrong kind of burrito. Sorry, y'all — although possibly not that sorry, because kitty blanket burritos are adorable.

Moving on.

Weirdly, though, it seems the Chili Fritos Burrito itself isn't entirely new, either: According to Dude Foods, something called the Half Pound Chili Fritos Burrito was available way back in 2010 — and, the post reviewing said item also noted that Taco Bell previously offered a “burrito with Fritos in it a couple years ago and then discontinued it.” This means that Fritos Burritos have seemingly had an on-again, off-again relationship with the Taco Bell menu for almost ten years now. I lived nowhere near any Taco Bells back then, so I very rarely paid attention to what was on the chain's menu; as such, I was unaware of these previous Fritos options when they were originally available. Given their frequent reoccurence, however, it looks like Taco Bell hasn't quite hit the right note with them in the past — but they're clearly not giving up just yet.

All of this, of course, inspires the following question: When will Fritos tacos arrive at Taco Bell? Back in December, an image captured during an investors presentation hinted that such a taco might be in the works. Given how long it took the company's R and D team to perfect the Doritos Locos Taco, though, it's likely that we still won't be seeing it for a while yet. Or, y'know, at all. I'm still not convinced a Frito would make a good taco shell, given how salty they tend to be — but maybe I'm wrong. Who knows.

In event, pay attention to your local Taco Bell menus if you live in Michigian; you might just be able to give the Chili Fritos Burrito and the Jalapeno Fritos Burrito a shot if you act fast enough. I have no idea how long they'll be available for, but if you manage to snag them, let us know how they are!
