WTF Is Up With Shia Labeouf's Rattail Braid?!

by Amy Sciarretto

Shia Labeouf was once the most promising young actor in Hollywood. Then something… happened. There was odd public behavior and then that whole plagiarism scandal, which left everyone going, 'WT actual F is up with Shia Labeouf?' Shia Labeouf's new man braid with shaved sides, worn to the Love True premiere, is the most confusing thing I've ever seen.

From getting hired by Steven Spielberg and dating Carey Mulligan to this 'do? Oh, Shia.

Man buns are in, and at least Jared Leto and Justin Bieber, you know, try to make them cool. But this fishtail x rattail thing that the actor has sitting on his shoulder looks like... a pet of some sort.

While I am all for edgy looks, there is just way too much going on, with the newly shaved sides, the tight and curly top, and the sheen of the suit. They don't converge properly.

The strange thing is that Johnny Depp, the epitome of dude cool, could probably rock this, uh, coif and get away with it. But because Labeouf has behaved so questionably for the past few years, he doesn't get that pass.

At this point, there are no more words for Labeouf's man 'do. Have a look at the side braid yourself. It's allegedly extensions, but, like, why?

Weird hair, don't care. Gotta love that bright blue hair elastic on the end. Oh, and he has an eyebrow piercing.

Shia's side braid looks like these three things.

1. A Snake

It's like a slithery serpent sitting on his shoulder. Ya know, red carpets and celeb events are stressful, so it's always good to have a pet close by to keep you calm. Yeah, that's not flying.

2. A Nod To The '80s

The '80s were all about those shaved sides with the three lines razored along the temple. They were also about rattails. So Labeouf is mixing and modernizing two classic trends of the decade. Was it a success? Well, that remains to be seen.

3. A Grown Out Mullet

You know, I could get down with this weird 'do if Labeouf was smiling knowingly in wink-wink, nudge-nudge fashion, but he looks way too serious. He also looks like he was growing out a mullet and threw it in a braid since he had to clean up nice with a suit.

Braids are totally in, just not like... this. The look below better suits S. Labeouf.
