'TIME' 100 Honoree Alexander Wang's Debut 2007 Collection Is Still On-Trend Today
Congrats are in order. Designer Alexander Wang made TIME's 100 Most Influential People list. Wang has ascended the fashion ranks to designer du jour status in recent years, with his eponymous line, his role at Balenciaga, and the fact that Jay Z name checks him in his lyrics. The designer's influence is felt far and wide, not only in fashion but in culture at large.
Wang is beloved by celebs and his take on minimalist chic is classic yet modern, and totally unforgettable.
In honor of his hard-earned (and much-deserved) selection to TIME's list, let's look back at his Fall 2007 collection, which boasted lots of his black and shades of gray.
We're going #TBT with Alexander Wang. There are lots of clean lines, neutrals, and ensembles that I'd wear today, no questions asked.
Most of these nearly-a-decade-old looks are anything but dated, still wearable in today's world, and his point of view remains obvious and the same. You look at these clothes and know they are Alexander Wang.
And that, fashion friends, is why TIME made the right choice in appointing Mr. Wang to their esteemed list.
Tailored Swift
Wang was doing tailored menswear way back when.
Flirt Skirt
What a fun and flirty skirt… that’s still wearable in 2015, even with suspenders.
V Neck
It was a different take on the V neck. Plunging and sexaaaaay!
Winter White
Wang’s aesthetic has evolved, but his signatures are the same. He’s always liked a tailored, sharp, and structured silhouette.
Sweater Weather
Wang’s love affair with black and gray has been a longterm thing, obviously, and this is one of my fave Wang looks… ever. It still feels fresh and youthful in 2015.
Leather Leggings
Leather leggings are a wardrobe staple in 2015, but who was doin’ ‘em back in 2007? Give Wang some of the credit that the Olsen Twins have received for popularizing leather tights.
Fifty Shades of Gray
Does anyone do shades of gray like A. Wang? Nope. He has a masterful command of that color range and palette.
Layers
The layering trend has been maaaj popular in this decade, but Wang was rocking it in the oh-seven.
Military Chic
All buttoned up and tailored!
Underwear-As-Outerwear
Bra tops and bandeaus are also staples in this day and age, but check out Wang, doing a bra top and underwear-as-outwear. This looks like something Rihanna would wear tomorrow.
