Will Marvel's New Spinoff Affect 'Agent Carter'?

by Kadeen Griffiths

This is either exciting news for fans of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or terrible news for fans of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Apparently, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is getting a spinoff series, and that's everything we know about the spinoff series so far. A spinoff that takes place while the original series is airing can be a good thing or a bad thing. It could be like Arrow and its spinoff The Flash, where there are so many crossover episodes that they may as well still be the same show. It could be like The Vampire Diaries and its spinoff The Originals, where it splits up a popular couple and — oh, wait, The Flash did that too with Barry and Felicity. All right, this news is both exciting and terrible for AoS fans, especially the 'shippers.

This would be the second spinoff series for the show after Marvel's Agent Carter, a prequel that followed the journey of Peggy Carter after the end of the war and was meant to connect us to when she founded the organization that would become S.H.I.E.L.D. However, after a first season that received lackluster ratings but tons of critical praise, Agent Carter has yet to be renewed for Season 2 — so what does this new spinoff mean for the fate of that show? Will we ever see Peggy found S.H.I.E.L.D.? Will we ever find out who Peggy married?

The rumors of a spinoff also make no mention of exactly which character from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. the spinoff will focus on. Sure, Entertainment Weekly reports that the rest of this season of AoS will set up for the spinoff (without the need for a backdoor pilot), but all that means is that it's going to be even harder for us to guess exactly what new show we might be watching on ABC come fall. Personally, I've got my fingers crossed that the spinoff focuses on a young Melinda May and the events that led her from being a field agent to becoming a self-exiled desk jockey, but May is far from the only compelling character on the show. She's just the one played by the actress who voiced Mulan, and we all know how I feel about Mulan .

So, while the speculation about the spinoff series begins in earnest, I have but only one request. Please, please, please don't let the development of a second AoS spinoff affect Season 2 of Agent Carter in any way — unless it's a crossover episode. Although Entertainment Weekly states that the chances of Agent Carter getting a second season is at roughly 60 percent, the show still hasn't been renewed and I can't be the only fan who is waited with bated breath for the announcement of whether the show has been renewed or been axed.

Hopefully ABC will throw some of the focus they're going to place on the new Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff Agent Carter's way. If the Season 1 finale is the series finale, I might just cry from all the questions still left unanswered.
