These '90s Movies Should Be Rebooted Too
After hearing that there might be a She's All That remake on the way soon, basically the entire world — or at least those of us who were coming of age in the '90s — rejoiced... and that's putting it lightly. Who among us didn't totally crush on Freddie Prinze Jr as Zack Siler? Who among us didn't wish we could get a makeover like Rachel Leigh Cook's Laney Boggs courtesy of a miniature Sookie Stackhouse? Who among us didn't wish Usher was our high school prom's DJ? Basically She's All That gave us all life and without it, our teenage years likely would have been a bit different.
But let's face it — She's All That was far from the only teen flick on the scene. There were plenty of other amazing '90s movies out there that changed our formative years in one way or another — or at least gave us something to obsessively quote with our friends. And given Hollywood's trend of producing reboots, chances are we might end up with a few more of our teen favorites hitting the big screen in the coming years. Luckily, I've got a few suggestions for which of those movies should get an update.
Clueless (1995)
I almost hesitate to suggest that Clueless gets a remake, as any version other than the original is bound to be subpar. Clueless is a downright classic, and I doubt there's any way to improve upon the irreverent humor it offered. That being said, I'm willing to give it a try, provided the casting was right (I'm seeing Elle Fanning as Cher... who's with me?)
The Craft (1996)
Don't lie and pretend you didn't develop a sudden interest in Wicca after seeing The Craft back in the day and start researching love spells in your dial-up Internet connection. It's okay, it happened to all of us. While I feel like some of the irony of the goth scene might be lost on a 2015 audience, I know there's a way to bring this movie into the modern age, and I for one would love to see it.
10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
10 Things I Hate About You was the movie that made us all fall in love with Heath Ledger. It's also another high school drama that, like She's All That, has great potential for a remake. Sure, some of the cornier aspects would have to be rewritten for today's disillusioned teens, but an updated version could easily become a new cult favorite, even if just to the nostalgic adults among us.
Cruel Intentions (1999)
I mean, I don't really know if this was meant to be a "teen movie," but teenagers seemed to be the ones that watched it most. Everyone at school was talking about the picnic scene and it catapulted Ryan Phillipe to hunk status. A remake of Cruel Intentions has some VERY dark potential, and I'd totally watch it.
I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
Sure, it's much easier to know what anyone did last summer these days thanks to the Internet, but that doesn't mean a new version of IKWYDLS wouldn't work. The script would have to be tweaked a bit, but the advent of social media stalking actually makes the chances that this movie will scare the crap out of you a certainty — so I'm all for it.
Can't Hardly Wait (1998)
I'll tell you what I can't wait for — this movie to be remade. Zing! A movie about high school graduation, life, love, and partying? What's not to like? This is another one that will move seamlessly to 2015 and I wouldn't be surprised if Can't Hardly Wait is the next teen movie to get the remake treatment.
