Kylie Jenner Photoshoot Starts Major Controversy

by Arielle Dachille

Kylie Jenner is making headlines for her makeup yet again — but this time, it's not in a good way. Many people on social media believe that it looks like Kylie Jenner is wearing blackface in a recent photo shoot. Ah... Another day, another Kardashian Kontroversy.

On Saturday, the reality TV daughter shared a few snaps of herself on Instagram wearing a liberal amount of iridescent makeup and bronzer. It's unclear what the photos are for. They look pretty fashion-esque, but knowing the Kardashian family, they may just be for fun.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As BuzzFeed reports, Jenner captioned one of the photos "what I wish I looked like all the time," which she has since taken down. Before Jenner removed the photo, many people began to mark what they believed as a resemblance in her makeup to blackface. Jenner subsequently became a trending topic on Twitter.

Many people believed that Jenner's comments and photos appropriated blackness and were very culturally insensitive, while others saw no issues and jumped to her defense. Jenner has since posted another photo to her Instagram, tagging her makeup artist and hairstylist with the caption: "This is a black light and neon lights people lets all calm down now."

Since posting those photos last night, Jenner also took to Twitter to respond to the hullabaloo.

Just taking a shot in the dark here: The intent of this look could've been to give Jenner an extreme fake tan look, a lá Lady Gaga in her September 2009 V Magazine spread. Then again, the theme could've been "alien creature" or something. However, it's undeniable that the creative powers behind "avant grade" photo shoots have a habit of not being super thoughtful about the cultural subtext of their aesthetic choices. Whenever people believe that they see this happening, it's definitely important to start a conversation and keep cultural appropriation in check.
