It really must be 2015, because now there’s The Mod, a dildo that you can control with your brain. If you're bored with your trusty vibrator, I can think of a few reasons to try this fully customizable dildo — aside from the fact that the options are quite literally endless. Along with such mind-blowing possibilities as mind-control, the vibrator can also be programmed to follow infinite patterns, respond to outside stimuli such as heartbeats, and be operated with just about anything.
First, the specs: Crowdfunded by an Indiegogo campaign, the first Mods are set to hit the market in August, but you can order one now (or support the creators, a sex-positive tech company called Comingle, in other ways). Or, side note: If you have $40,000 to burn, you and your friends can take a private jet and a bunch of sex toys for a spin at 30,000 feet. I mean, why not?
The vibrator comes with a Wii nunchuck (probably not what Nintendo had in mind), but if you’re technology-minded, you can program it to be controlled with whatever your heart desires. For example, in this video on their website that depicts a brain sensor and four electrodes stuck to someone's forehead, the Mod reads signals from the mind, sent wirelessly via Bluetooth. An app that connects the EEG brain sensor to the dildo monitored blinking, jaw-clenching, and mellowness levels to speed up or slow down the vibrator.
In any event, here are a few reasons to give this thing a spin, in case you're not jazzed enough already.
1. The Mod is the Build-a-Bear of vibrators.
In a very educational Sex Geeks podcast, Comingle’s Paul Clifton and Melanie Sachno discussed the Mod’s ins and outs, if you will. I learned that the dildo can be set to vibrate in any pattern — apps from their website will change its controls, or how the vibrations respond to controls. Based in Atlanta, the open-source, DIY sex toy company aims to allow people to customize their playthings in any way they please. (Open-source means that the company shares all of its plans and codes, so that anyone who has that kind of brain can mess with programming, or even build their own vibrator using Comingle's parts.)
2. If you build it... you will come.
The website will offer lots of instructions, to make it simple for everyone — not just techies — to make their own patterns. And DIY vibrations aside, the dildo is made of silicone and contains three independently controlled motors, which aim to create a more thrilling experience.
3. High-tech sex toys are the way of the future, and the future is now.
Not only are there infinite possibilities with the Mod, technology and sex in general are the peanut butter and jelly of the modern world: from a vibrator that tracks and compares your orgasm statistics with your friends to a wristband that converts energy created by jerking off into power for electronics, it looks like we’ll only see more inventions like this soon. Here's hoping!
