Every Hilary Duff Single, Ranked
Big news, pop music fans: Hilary Duff’s new single, “Sparks,” is coming out on April 7 (only two weeks away!). The 27-year-old singer/actress posted a preview of the upcoming track on YouTube on Thursday, and it sounds great. In order to prepare myself for “Sparks," I decided to revisit some of Duff’s back catalog on Thursday evening (you know, like you do). As it turns out, she’s released a lot of fun songs over the last 12 years. I think Duff is a much better pop star than we give her credit for. (Well, except for that whole taking a seven-year break thing… that was kind of annoying).
No, she's never had a No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and no, she’s never been nominated for a Grammy, but Duff has some pretty memorable tunes in her discography. In fact, I’m willing to bet you know more of her lyrics than you realize. For example, I was surprised to discover recently that I know all of the words to “So Yesterday" — every single one. (Get on my level.)
So, in honor of the impending release of “Sparks,” I ranked all 16 singles Hilary Duff has released worldwide thus far. The countdown gets off to a bit of a rocky start, but believe me, the good definitely outweighs the bad. Here we go...
#16. "Beat Of My Heart" from Most Wanted (Dec. 2005)
Cringe-worthy.
#15. "Any Other Day" from the What Goes Up soundtrack (May 2009)
What is Duff even singing about in "Any Other Day"? I have no idea.
#14. "Someone's Watching Over Me" from Hilary Duff (Feb. 2005)
Yawn. "Someone's Watching Over Me" is a snooze-fest.
#13. "Reach Out" from Best of Hilary Duff (Oct. 2008)
"Reach Out" is just... unpleasant to listen to. I don't know how else to describe it.
#12. "Why Not" from The Lizzie McGuire Movie soundtrack (2003)
Why not do a crazy dance? Duff makes an excellent point here.
#11. "Play With Fire" from Dignity (Aug. 2006)
"Play With Fire" has a great beat, but it doesn't have much else going for it.
#10. "Little Voice" from Metamorphosis (May 2004)
The "la la la's" in "Little Voice" are where it's at.
#9. "Fly" from Metamorphosis (Aug. 2004)
"Fly" totally makes me want to spread my wings. Totally.
#8. "Chasing the Sun" (July 2014)
It took a little while to grow on me, but I really like "Chasing the Sun" now. It's adorable.
#7. "So Yesterday" from Metamorphosis (July 2003)
Duff kind of jacked Avril Lavigne's Let Go style with "So Yesterday," but I still love it.
#6. "Stranger" from Dignity (July 2007)
I'm surprised "Stranger" wasn't a bigger hit in the United States.
#5. "Come Clean" from Metamorphosis (Jan. 2004)
"Come Clean" gets extra points for being the Laguna Beach theme song.
#4. "Our Lips Are Sealed" from the A Cinderella Story soundtrack (Aug. 2004)
The Duff sisters' version is infinitely better than the original Go-Go's version. Yeah, I said it.
#3. "Wake Up" from Most Wanted (July 2005)
"Wake Up's" hook is irresistible. Irresistible, I tell you!
#2. "With Love" from Dignity (Feb. 2007)
"With Love" is one of my all-time favorite workout jams.
#1. "All About You" (Aug. 2014)
From its flirty lyrics to its insanely catchy chorus, "All About You" is pure pop perfection. I can't say enough good things about it. Seven months later, I still have the song on repeat.
Will Duff top "All About You" with "Sparks"? We'll find out on April 7.
