'Grey's Anatomy' Has Good News For MerDer Fans

by Martha Sorren

This week's episode of Grey's Anatomy had its ups and downs. So, bad news first: Derek kissed another woman. I know, I was so disappointed in him. But his actions after the event spoke volumes as he rushed right home and declared to Meredith that she was the one for him. Now Meredith doesn't know about the kiss but maybe that's for the best, because Derek is home and MerDer is back together. Although I'm an advocate for honesty, I think it's better that the kiss Derek shared with his research fellow stays in the past. The moment it happened Derek knew it was wrong, and he stopped it and told the woman that he loved his wife and didn't want to be with anyone else.

Then he flew home and gave Meredith a romantic speech. "I thought DC was everything but I was wrong. You are," he told her. "I love you and I'm not going to stop loving you. Meredith, I can't live without you." It seems like it took him leaving his wife and children behind for Derek to realize that his family was enough. Yeah new research projects are cool, but they're not worth throwing your whole life away over.

But I'm the most proud of Meredith because she didn't just take Derek back the second he came home. This has been a season full of growth for her. She's realized that she doesn't need Derek to survive, and that she's a great doctor in her own right. So it was major that she stood up for herself when Derek gave his romantic speech and didn't just cave. "I can live without you," she told him firmly. "But I don't want to."

I'm glad that MerDer isn't breaking up, but I'm even more glad that they're staying together because they both truly want to, and not because they feel obligated or they're scared to be alone. I think their relationship will get even stronger after the turmoil it has undergone, and that in the end this whole mess will have been worth it because Meredith and Derek will be better than ever. It took a long time for both of them to get to this point, but it was totally worth it in the end.
