In Honor of 'Carrie,' Let's Revisit Our Favorite Prom Movies

Carrie, the remake of the 1976 horror classic, hit theaters today. The movie, led by Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore, follows the spooky tale of a high school girl with telekinetic powers. If you know anything about anything, you're well aware of the infamous "pigs blood on the prom queen" scene. I am physically unable to handle scary movies (my heart rate goes haywire before, during, and after any jump scare), but I live and die for any film that promises a high school dance scene. Frankly, I am powerless (perhaps it is Carrie's telekinesis pulling me in). Thus, I have no choice but to set my fears aside and see Carrie. In honor of this film, which, at its root, is really just another teen movie, why not revisit some of the best prommy/high school dance-y flicks? Take your corsage out of the refrigerator and put on your sparkliest eyeshadow, because it's about to get FANCY in here.

'Grease'

Sweet gal Sandy goes to the Rydell High dance with greaser Danny. They clear the area with their "Hand Jive" moves. Everyone is like, "look at those ham sandwiches!" BUT THEN, Cha-Cha steals Danny away and the two of them get NASTY on the dance floor. Sorry, Sandy. You got served.

'She's All That'

Laney goes with bad guy Dean to the prom, Zack is sad, whatever. The true highlight of the prom: DJ Usher. There's a choreographed group routine. To "The Rockafeller Skank." 1999, you were so generous.

'Drive Me Crazy'

At the big dance, Chase climbs to the top of the hideous sculpture the senior class commissioned for the school (the hell?) to profess his love to Nicole. Few movie scenes have made me laugh out loud as violently as when the sculpture is unveiled only to reveal Adrian Grenier. How did he get up there? How did he go unnoticed up until that point? How long had he been up there? What IS that statue?!

'Never Been Kissed'

As a real high schooler, Josie Grossie gets egged on the night of her prom. I feared the same would happen to me one day. It never happened to me. I thank my lucky stars every night.

'Mean Girls'

Cady has a glorious "After School Special Moment" when she wins Spring Fling Queen. She gives a "popularity turned me into a goblin, didn't make me happy" speech, breaks her crown into approximately 70,000 pieces, and shares them with fellow dance attendees. All while wearing a Mathletes jacket. And then she kisses Aaron Samuels and everything the opposite of fair.

'10 Things I Hate About You'

I always say, "There is no better place for a scheme to surface than a prom!" The plot orchestrated between Patrick, Joey, and Cameron is revealed, Bianca punches Joey, Kat storms out, and Bianca and Cameron end up together. I was sorely disappointed when my own prom was not that dramatic. However, the DJ played 'SOS' by Rihanna as soon as my date and I arrived, so my prom was a win.

'Pretty In Pink'

Punk girl Andie gets asked to the prom by her dream dude, makes her own dress, but the dream dude backs out (because she's too alt for his waspy lifestyle). Andie goes to the dance with BFF Duckie, dream dude realizes he mucked things up, and Duckie is like, "yeah, you can hang out with my BFF Andie. You seem like a good guy after all." Cue millions of people rewriting that ending. Andie and Duckie forever!

'Princess Protection Program'

If you haven't seen this Disney Channel Original Movie, you don't know anything about life. There is an attempted coup staged at a high school dance. Literally. An attempt at an actual government overthrow of a fake country called Costa Luna. Movie is serious.
