'X-Men: Apocalypse' Has Found Its Jubilee

by Nick Romano

As we get closer and closer to the release of X-Men: Apocalypse on May 27, 2016, director Bryan Singer has been busy firming up its cast of mutants. But now he's made an announcement that is truly X-tactic! At long last, popular X-Men character Jubilee will finally make her way into an X-Men movie. Singer announced on Wednesday that newcomer Lana Condor will portray Jubilee in X-Men: Apocalypse , the sequel to Days of Future Past.

If you're not over the moon in light of this news, I'll explain why you should be in a moment. But first, for those not-so-versed-in-X-Men readers out there, who is Jubilee?

Jubilee, aka Jubilation Lee, is a young mutant who lost her parents at an early age. She was forced into a life of stealing and sleeping in a mall, until the X-Men picked her up and gave her a place at the School for Gifted Youngsters. Jubilee's power is to project powerful energy bursts from her hands that resemble fireworks. She was a major part of the X-Men cartoon that aired on Saban in the '90s on Saturday mornings, and she's developed a fan base over time.

Singer has been trying to get Jubilee involved in one of his X-Men movies for a while now. Technically, she was featured in two films already; you can glimpse her in the background at Xavier's school in X-Men, as played by actress Katrina Florence, while Kea Wong made an appearance as the mutant in the beginning of X2. A deleted scene on the X2 home release reveals a brief moment where she almost loses control of her powers in the museum.

Singer even tried to include her alongside the bevy of characters in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Following the release of the film, early concept art made the rounds online and revealed what she would've looked like if she hadn't been cut.

Given the nature of Singer's announcement, we hope this means Jubilee will finally have the part she deserves in X-Men: Apocalypse. Candor joins the already cast Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), James McAvoy (Professor X), Evan Peters (Quicksilver), Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Oscar Isaac (Apocalypse), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler). Channing Tatum is also expected to make his first appearance as Gambit in Apocalypse before landing his own solo movie. All and all, this movie is shaping up rather nicely!
