We’re Baaack! 11 Fashion Trends That Are Suddenly Fresh Again

This spring, what's old is new — and that includes some old-school fashion trends you thought were gone for good. But just in time for the warmer weather, retro trends have been revamped and brought into the modern day through sharp tailoring and an attention to detail.

For those of you who didn’t save your short overalls (aka, "shorteralls") from middle school and whose only peasant tops are reserved for your hippie costume at Halloween, we've partnered with H&M to give you a rundown of where to nab all of the newest trend revivals, how to wear them, and why you should embrace them with open arms.

Wide-Leg Patterned Pants

You could see both men and women rocking this trend back at Woodstock, and the comfortable trend is back with breezy pants in warm, wild patterns. Pair the pants with a simple T-shirt for maximum effect.

Denim

Denim is always popular, but this spring is all about bringing back old denim trends. The clean-cut, classic denim jacket — as opposed to a ripped-to-shreds punk style or Western style — is back. We’ll also see the return of ’60s- and ’70s-era denim skirts and dresses in bold blue washes.

Loafers

Loafers are cool again this spring, especially if they’re tasseled. The 1950s prep school staple turned 1960s must-wear winter shoe is ready to take on a new decade at the workplace or a casual Sunday brunch.

Bellbottoms

Your parents swore that bellbottom jeans would stay in the ’70s, but then they came back in the 1990s. This time, bellbottoms are keeping a ’70s-style high waist but ditching the extreme bell shape of the ’90s in favor of a more conservative bootcut shape.

Mesh

This isn’t Cyndi Lauper’s mesh. The returning trend is a more modern mesh, if you will. Trade in neon colors for basic black, and use it as an accent to more tailored pieces. This upgrade ensures that your look skews more “edgy and hip” than “‘80s-themed dance party.”

Overalls

Yes, overalls. The grunge fashion staple of the 1990s is back, but the key words are “tailored” and “clean-cut.” While you could go full-’90s and unhook one strap (to better showcase your flannel shirt), we’ve seen it styled with feminine, printed button-downs and chunky accessories to great effect.

The Leisure Suit

The casual suit, made famous in the 1970s, gets a revamp for 2015. The light colors are the same, and so is the relaxed fit. But this time around, the leisure suit is accompanied by subtle, feminine details. With shorts, it’s perfect for a day at the office or a power lunch.

Floral Crowns

You can thank the revival of festival culture for the return of boho fashions from the late 1960s and 1970s. You’ll find floral crowns in bold, powerful colors with oversized blossoms at a music festival near you.

'80s-Era Swimwear

Metallics? Check. Bold colors? Check. Extra bells and whistles? Double check. We can leave the neon in the ’80s but keep eye-catching embellishments like bold, black zippers and feminine ruffles.

Fringe

When the 1960s and 1970s come back, you can be assured that fringe flair will come back, too. But that doesn’t mean all that fringe has to be straight out of Woodstock. This season, fringe pays homage to the flappers of the Roaring ’20s, especially when it comes to dresses. If you don’t want to go overboard, go for a classic all-black look when you add fringe.

Peasant Tops

The 2015 peasant top won’t immediately evoke images of a farm girl or a 1960s flower child. Keep an eye out for peasant-influenced blouses in all kinds of styles. With a pair of slim-cut jeans, it fits seamlessly into a modern-day wardrobe.
