Gordon May Bring Skye's Mom Back On 'S.H.I.E.L.D.'

by Leah Marilla Thomas

The character Gordon, everyone's favorite eyeless Inhuman on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., is clearly up to something. He could just be collecting Inhumans like Pokemon, but what if Gordon's also trying to bring Skye's mom back to life? Call it wishful thinking, but I really want Skye to get a chance to meet her mother. I hated how she died. It's such an awful trope when a woman is killed off to motivate a hero and/or villain.

My hopes are raised because Dichen Lachman is set to reappear on an upcoming episode called "Afterlife," which is quite the evocative title for a character with prolonged youth. According to the official ABC press release, Cal and Raina will also appear in the episode, as well as a handsome new Inhuman named Lincoln Campbell, played by Luke Mitchell from The Tomorrow People.

I'm also interested in where Gordon and the others of his kind are based. Is this some sort of Inhuman retreat? Is it a school? The X-Men have Xavier's Academy for Gifted Youngsters and there is an Avengers Academy in Marvel Comics that takes in various supernatural individuals. We've already visited the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy on the ABC series. On Agent Carter, we were introduced to an early iteration of the Black Widow Academy. It seems only right that the Inhumans would have some sort of training facility, especially since these powers seem to require a lot of practice and care before they can be mastered.

If you recall, Daniel Whitehall/Werner Reinhardt killed Jiaying shortly after Skye/Daisy was born. They had met in Agent Carter times and were reunited when an undercover Hydra agent finally released him in the 1980s, having found Jiaying in a village. He experimented on her, cut her up, and left her disembowled in the woods while he retained her youthful glow. This is already weird science — who says it can't work a second time?

All he would need, technically, are the bodies of Jiaying and Daniel Whitehall. Both of them were killed, but if Jiaying's gift was taken from Whitehall and given back to her, couldn't she still be revived? Gordon could probably use a Doctor like Cal and a scientist like Raina (remember when she did science), too.

This has a chance to be incredibly poetic as well. Whitehall was shot quickly by Coulson. He died with minimal bodily damage. This infuriated Cal, who wanted to torture Whitehall and avenge his dead wife. Wouldn't it be amazing if that tiny change in plans allowed Jiaying to live again? Those small coincidences are what epic stories are made of, and Cal has to set aside his differences with Coulson eventually. They have similar goals! It's ridiculous. Skye is in good hands. There has to be a reason that Gordon hasn't swiped her as well.

I think this has to be part of Gordon's goal on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. — we've already seen how important Jiaying was to him growing up. Of course, Jiaying's appearance could be another flashback. I'm willing to accept that. However, it seems to me that the pieces are being put into place, and Cal could have his family reunion after all.
