How Did Demi Lovato & Wilmer Valderrama Meet?

March 16 marks an important milestone for Demi Lovato. As shown by her Instagram post, it is the 3-year anniversary of sobriety for the singer and she's celebrating her big step in a big way — with the man she loves. Demi Lovato dedicated her post to Wilmer Valderrama, her boyfriend, showing a photo of the two kissing and giving him credit in the caption for helping her through her darkest hours. She said,

He's loved me the way I never thought I deserved to be loved and with this day marking my 3rd year sober. After sharing my ups, putting up with my downs and supporting my recovery... he still never takes credit and I want the world to know how incredible his soul is. I really wouldn't be alive today without him. I love you Wilmer.

While the pair has often kept details of their relationship relatively private and under wraps, especially when they were on-again, off-again in the beginning, it is wonderful to see them showing the positive influence their relationship has had on Lovato's health and well-being. But seeing as much of their relationship has been kept so mysterious over time, some may be wondering how Lovato and her supportive and loyal boyfriend met in the first place. As it turns out, Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama met while involved in something decidedly un-romantic — politics!

In late 2014, Lovato opened up to And Pop about meeting Valderrama at his house for a PSA shoot for Voto Latino back in 2010, a video announcement that would encourage young people to vote for upcoming elections. “I was like, ‘Oh my god. This guy is so attractive.’ We started talking," Lovato said of her first impression of the actor. Valderrama apparently complimented her on using her Disney platform for such a positive cause during their first time meeting as well!

Though it's surprising their relationship blossomed out of an encouragement for the youth of today to fulfill their civic duty, it definitely makes for a fun and interesting story. Lovato went on to describe Valderrama as her "best friend," who she happens to be attracted to. You really can't ask for more in a relationship, right?

But as you can see from Lovato's Instagram post, he did give her much more. He provided support during her recovery, which was a long time coming. Lovato, who has been open about her struggles with addiction, eating disorders, and bipolar disorder, certainly could have used all the help she could have gotten. It's wonderful that Valderrama was there for her throughout it all, and still is, as seen by a post he made on the same day in support of his girlfriend's big day. Let's hope that the happiness continues on!
