There's constantly a swirl of engagement rumors over the heads of any two celebrities who are dating, and Lena Dunham and her boyfriend Jack Antonoff are no exception. But now the Girls star is speaking out about when she wants to get married, and it should cool any wedding bell rumors the tabloids have cooked up. Lena Dunham will not getting married until gay marriage is legal in all 50 states, she told Ellen DeGeneres on Monday.
It's not an uncommon sentiment for people to have, including many celebrities. In the past people like Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard declined to get married until after the Defense of Marriage Act was struck down in 2013. But Dunham is waiting even longer. She wants all 50 states to recognize gay marriage before she'll consider wedding her boyfriend. Currently only 37 states have legalized gay marriage, so Dunham and Antonoff might be in for a wait. But the couple doesn't mind because it's so important to them.
"The idea of having a celebration that can't be fully shared among all the people in my life and all the people that we love just doesn't really feel like a celebration at all," Dunham said of her choice. "So, until that's something that everyone can join into with no sense of being left out on any level, politically, emotionally, it's just not something that we're gonna do."
It's a sweet gesture, and hopefully this will calm down the people on ring-finger watch. Dunham has incited engagement rumors before by wearing a band on that special finger, but it turned out to be a friendship ring from her producer and best friend Jenni Konner.
"We have friendship rings, they’re a stack of three, we both wear them. We both wear them on that finger because that’s the finger they fit on," Konner later told Cosmopolitan. "When they announced that she was wearing an engagement ring, I was, like, 'Yeah, [she’s engaged] … to me.'"
Now Dunham can feel free to wear whatever jewelry she likes on whichever appendage because she's not engaged yet, and she's made it clear she's not getting married until everyone can. Dunham out.
