You might know him as Asher on How To Get Away With Murder and John Bennett on Orange Is the New Black, but did you know that Matt McGorry is a feminist? First, let me say, never I have a found someone more attractive than I find McGorry right now. I know you'll feel the same way after learning what he said on social media on Thursday about feminism. Not only did he declare himself a feminist, but he also shined a positive light on feminism showing why it's something not to be afraid of, but rather something that should be embraced.
McGorry beautifully wrote on Facebook,
I'm embarrassed to admit that I only recently discovered the ACTUAL definition of "feminism". The fact that the term is sometimes clouded with anything other than pure support and positivity in our society is very tragic. I believe in gender equality. Being a feminist is for both women AND men. I AM A FEMINIST. In for equality? Pass it on -#LeanInTogether #LeanIn #IAmAFeminist #HeForShe
Anyone else just *swoon* over his words? Yeah, me too.
Sadly, as McGorry points out, feminism is sometimes frowned upon. Not only do some people, including women not wanting to define themselves as feminists, because of it's unfortunate negative connotation, but others bash the term without truly understanding its meaning.
Like McGorry writes, it's for "both men AND women." It's not a way for women to say we're better than anyone else, to judge others, or to bash men. However, it is a way to unite both genders in an equal way. Hopefully, more and more people will start to see feminism this way. Also, let's hope others follow in McGorry's footsteps by promoting feminism, rather than tearing it apart. It's about time men and women stand together united to promote equality.
