'Self/less' Proves Money Can Buy Immortality
"Immortality has side effects," is the theme of the new trailer for Self/less , starring Ryan Reynolds as an old man (Ben Kingsley) trapped by choice inside a younger man's body. Also starring The Imitation Game's Matthew Goode and Downton Abbey's Michelle Dockery, the film follows a wealthy man dying from cancer, who undergoes a medical procedure that transfers his consciousness into the body of a younger, more healthy man. But where did the body come from? And at what price did it arrive at Kingsley's disposal?
At first glance, the film appears to offer little more than a joy ride: When Kingsley as Reynolds receives his new body, the first thing he does is go on yacht trips, buy expensive cars, and bed beautiful, young women (the latter of which is a creepy scenario — do these women know they are having sex with an old man?) While the film looks to tackle familiar themes seen in cinema past — If immortality was achievable, would it be worth it? What would the ripple effect of living forever be? — this psychological science fiction thriller appears to have some tricks up its sleeve. The film's director, Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fall), is known for taking his audiences on a richly painted landscape of the mind, so I'll reserve any further judgement.
But it did get me thinking, if you could live in Ryan Reynolds' body for a day, what would you do? I have a few ideas...
Makeout With Blake Lively
This is a no brainer.
Attempt to Breastfeed
He said of his new life with his daughter: "I mean, I’ve even tried breastfeeding. It’s frustrating for the baby and frankly disturbing for me."
Do As Many Pull-Ups As I Could Before Passing Out
Did you see The Green Lantern? Dude's ripped.
Use My Celebrity Status To Make a Fan's Day
You know, be someone's date to their high school prom, indulge in some silly selfies, go surprise a girl scout troop...
Volunteer At An Animal Shelter
Because this is what it looks like when Ryan Reynolds and animals collide. I would do this all day long, pausing only grab another dozen puppies to canoodle.
Stage A Dick Reunion With Kristen Dunst and Michelle Williams
A fictional telling of the women behind Deepthroat Water Gate scandal, two teenage girls, and their obsession with President Nixon. Reynolds plays a hunky love interest for Kristen Dunst's character, and we'd love to see the pair reunited.
