Charlie Hunnam's casting as the very-messed-up-yet-still-somehow-protagonist of 50 Shades of Grey , Christian Grey, was a head scratcher — but, understandably, no one was more confused than Hunnam's Sons of Anarchy co-stars. In a new interview with EW, the cast of SoA spoke out about Hunnam's weird jump from one of the best shows on television to what is essentially going to be big-screen softcore porn.
"When he told me that it was happening or that he was considering it I just howled," Maggie Tiff, who portrays Hunnam's character Jax's wife, Tara, commented. "I mean I think we all did. We’re all like, what?" Tiff continued that she supports Hunnam, though, which is pretty sweet. "I think he’s very brave to it. He doesn’t do anything unless he feels it deep down. He’s not going to do something because all of his agents are telling him to do something. That’s what makes me think it stands a chance of being really, really great. If he has that conviction going in, then you know it’ll be great."
Katey Sagal, who portrays Gemma, was equally supportive, but also honest. "I’m really proud of him...the choice was not an obvious one for him. But for good or bad, he will throw himself 100 percent in. I don’t know if I want to see all that, but maybe." No one wants to see all that, Katey. I feel you.
Last but not least, SoA creator Kurt Sutter added: "We’re thrilled for Charlie. He works hard, constantly challenges himself and his craft. He is a star, in all the right ways."
As previously reported, the film adaptation 50 Shades of Grey — starring Hunnam and Dakota Johnson — will hit theaters next year. When we expect to be howling alongside Tiff.
