Candice Swanepoel Was Once Told to Lose Weight

by Danelle A. Sandoval

You would never think that someone as gorgeous as Candice Swanepoel would ever face criticism for the way that she looked. But unfortunately, society kind of sucks. Because, while working as a model, Candice Swanepoel was told to lose weight, a criticism she told SELF almost led her to almost quit her modeling career.

Crazy, right? Swanepoel said, "I was so used to people criticizing me for being too thin that it was shocking to me. I was crying." Shocking to Swanepoel and even more shocking to us! But you know what? She got through it. And just when she was about to give up, she was offered the chance to become a Victoria's Secret model. What now, haters?

Ladies — we all know we can be our biggest critics. But what happens when the ugly words come from someone else? Being 5'9 and 110 pounds, society deems that I should be happy and that I really don't have the right to complain about the way I look. But that doesn't mean I don't get hurt when people assume that I have an eating disorder or think I'm unhealthily skinny. No matter what size, shape, or form, we've all experienced a sense of insecurity, or worse, bullying, like Swanepoel's haters. I think we can all take a lesson from the strong-willed model and remember to stick up for ourselves! Tune out all the negativity and just keep on keeping on.

Thank you, Candice Swanepoel for being an awesome role model and a real-life inspiration to all of us out here trying to function!
