So, it finally happened: Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter were married on Saturday, Feb. 14, in what sounds like a positively magical ceremony at a historic church in the Isle of Wight, England. While the ceremony is said to have just taken place — aka, there's not much information available about how exactly it looked, whether or not pictures are available, and the like — from what we do know about the event, it sounds breathtaking: As previously reported, the ceremony and reception did indeed take place on a "spectacular period property" in South-East England, specifically at the St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church in Mottistone, Isle of Wight. The reception was held in an equally castle-like venue: the Mottistone Manor, which was nearby.
Congratulations are, of course, in order for the lovely couple — not only did they manage to totally pull a fast one on all of us by keeping the wedding a secret until literally just this past Friday , but they also managed to have a wedding on Valentine's day that doesn't sound cheesy at all. That's a huge feat, and one I'm sure is only achievable by Cumberbatch. However, now that the wedding has taken place, I have to wonder: Who exactly of Cumberbatch and Hunter's celebrity friends attended the affair?
It's a pretty fair question to ask, especially considering the sheer amount of Hollywood buddies that Cumberbatch has: Martin Freeman, Keira Knightley, and Tom Hiddleston, just to name a few. So, who amongst the celebs were there to share Cumberbatch's special day?
Short answer: Sadly, it's actually not totally confirmed, but there are some rumors that give us enough info to at least speculate. According to The Daily Mail prior to the wedding, Cumberbatch's Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman was set to be his best man during the ceremony — seriously, they are so adorable — and Cumberbatch's The Imitation Game co-star Keira Knightley was also set to be in attendance. As for Tom Hiddleston, we got more than just rumors there: There's actual photographic evidence that Hiddleston attended Cumberbatch's wedding, and looked super dapper while doing it.
Obviously, Cumberbatch and Hunter are a very private couple — I mean, that's indicated enough by the fact that their wedding was kept a secret until literally the day before it happened — so it's totally understandable and likely that we might never know the specific details of the event, or even get to see photos. And hey, that's totally OK! No matter how much we may all love Cumberbatch, this was still his special day, and the only thing that's important is that it was as great a day as it sounds like it was.
Congrats to the happy couple!
