'Supernatural' Tackles 'Hansel & Gretel'... Again

by Allyson Koerner

What comes with a show that follows ghosts, demons, angels, and every creepy creature that could possibly roam Earth, Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory? Oh how about Supernatural adapting a classic fairy tale, like Hansel and Gretel ? On Tuesday's new episode, titled "About a Boy," Sam and Dean Winchester will take on that famous evil witch (portrayed by Downton Abbey's Lesley Nicol, aka Mrs. Patmore), in addition to those iconic kiddos Hansel and Gretel. Per usual, The CW hit series will give the tale its own twist.

In addition to including the original characters, the episode will focus on the disappearance of people whose clothes are left behind. Soon after Sam and Dean begin investigating, Dean is transformed into his 14-year-old self, thanks to Hansel, who is trying to please the evil witch.

Supernatural isn't the first show to depict Hansel and Gretel in its own way. It's been done many times before, and, of course, with a spin. It's very rare to find a series or movie telling the exact original fairy tale and beloved story from beginning to end. With that said, here are three projects that told the tale of the famous evil witch who tried to capture the young children that left a trail of bread crumbs.

The One Where Adults Were Poisoned Thanks To A Child Ghost

For those who don't recall, Supernatural already did its own take on Hansel and Gretel in Season 3, Episode 5 titled "Bedtime Stories." Remember that girl was in a coma (kind of like Snow White), and through her childlike self and favorite fairy tales she was hurting and killing people? For example, and as you can see in the above clip, two adults get lost, they meet an old woman, she feeds them pie, she poisons them, and she kills the man, but the woman gets away. Talk about turning a creepy tale into an even scarier one.

The One Where Homeless Childrens' Organs Were Snatched

It only makes sense that NBC's Grimm would tell the tale of Hansel and Gretel. However, this time around homeless children, named Hanson and Gracie, got caught up in the creature world's black market of human organ dealing. I'm not sure what's worse: being prepared for slaughter or having your organs sold on the black market? I choose neither.

The One Where Hansel & Gretel Became Witch Hunters

Have you ever seen Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters? It stars Jeremy Renner as Hansel, and Gemma Arterton as Gretel. Not only are they adults in the movie, but they are bounty hunters tracking and killing witches all across the globe. Apparently, these two escaped the evil witch when they were tots, and now they are out for vengeance as adults against witches.

In addition to these three, I'm sure there are many other versions, and will be even more, of Hansel and Gretel. Like Supernatural, which can't get enough of the tale, others will find inspiration thanks to Hansel, Gretel, and the witch.
