Jennifer Lopez & Sean Combs

In 2001, the couple split after a two-year romance. Sadly, Combs’ publicist announced the news on none other than Valentine’s Day. Ouch.

Hayden Panettiere & Milo Ventimiglia

Eventually the 12-year age difference between the Heroes actors proved too much to handle. In 2009, the pair ended their relationship a few days after the romantic holiday.

Jude Law & Sienna Miller

The on-and-off couple officially called things off in February 2011: They had previously broken up in 2006 after a cheating scandal involving Jude Law and the nanny hit the tabloids. The couple confirmed their final breakup on February 8, which had to make the impending romantic holiday a bit of a bummer.

Amanda Seyfried & Ryan Phillippe

The Les Mis star once dated Reese Witherspoon’s ex-husband for about three months before the pair called it quits in early February 2011, and they both spent the holiday alone. Funnily enough they ended up resuming the romance in March for another four more months. Perhaps being a new couple for the 14th was just too much pressure and they decided to skip it altogether.

Dianna Agron & Alex Pettyfer

Talk about a bad Valentine’s Day! The I Am Number Four costars had a pretty bad split with that culminated with Agron moving out of their shared home the week of the Valentine’s Day holiday in 2011. Tabloid reports surfaced after their break-up that she was forced to stay in a hotel under an alias and temporarily feared for her safety.

Sophia Bush & Austin Nichols

The One Tree Hill co-stars had their split hit the news on February 15, 2012. They might have made it through Valentine’s Day, but you have to wonder how romantic it could have been if they were on the brink of breaking up.

Maci Bookout & Kyle King

In 2012, the Teen Mom stars split just days shy of their two-year anniversary, and just a week before Valentine’s. That’s a tough pill to swallow, especially since Bookout had recently learned King was cheating on her. It’s a February 14 I’m sure she would like to forget.

Nick Jonas & Delta Goodrem

The musician dated Australian pop star Delta Goodrem for nine months in 2011-2012, but they couldn’t survive their first romantic February as a couple. The 19-year-old and his 27-year-old girlfriend confirmed their split one week after Valentine’s Day.

Regina King & Malcolm-Jamal Warner

The A Cinderella Story and Miss Congeniality 2 star told Us Weekly that she once had a boyfriend who dumped her on February 14. “Someone broke up with me on Valentine’s,” she told the magazine. “Yeah. I’m serious. Then he actually sent me flowers that said, ‘I still love you’ and I threw the flowers in the trash and he was upset that I threw them in the trash and I was like, ‘F**k you.’”

King didn’t name the perpetrator outright, but said that people “will know.” It’s assumed it was her ex Warner, as that break-up was really tough for her: She said at the time of their 2013 split that she was heartbroken because he’d decided he just “wasn’t feeling it anymore.”

Jason London & Sofia Karstens

The Dazed and Confused actor married 7th Heaven actress Sofia Karstens in 2011. But in 2014, she filed for divorce the week before Valentine’s Day, apparently not wanting to spend the holiday with her husband of three years.

After a year of dating, the singer and reality star ended their relationship just a few days before Valentine’s Day in 2014. Such unfortunate timing.
