Maria Menounos' Feminist Fail at the SAGs
We all know that when it comes to watching the many E! Network red carpet telecasts, there will always be awkward moments between the E! hosts and those they interview. But on Sunday night's E! SAG Awards Live from the Red Carpet show, host Maria Menounos made a huge no-no while speaking to Amanda Peet. Peet probably had plenty she could have shared with Menounos about her great new HBO series Togetherness, in which she co-stars with Melanie Lynskey and Mark Duplass. Instead, Menounos only asked Peet about her husband, David Benioff, because he is one of the creators of Game of Thrones.
Here's the thing: I am a huge Game of Thrones fan. I've read the books and I am obsessed with everything about the series. So Menounos' excitement about the show — and her desire to grab as many secrets as possible about the series — makes total sense when she's talking to Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, or Natalie Dormer, actors she did interview prior to her chat with Peet. But it was completely unfair that she focused all of her interview time with Peet on Game of Thrones as well. And the only time they didn't speak about the series? When Menounos asked Peet who she was wearing. Oof.
Did Menounos not do her homework about Peet's new series? Did she decide not to watch it or to just ignore the fact that Peet is an actress herself with her own projects who may want to talk about something other than her husband? And to add insult to the injury, when Peet expressed how happy she was that Menounos was a fan of her husband's show and that she also loved Game of Thrones, Menounos kept pushing the topic by asking Peet if she knew any spoilers, and what it was like to have her husband write the series while she's in the same room as him. If the interview was a work of fiction, Menounos would have easily failed the Bechdel Test.
The whole situation was really quite a shame, considering Menounos is a strong working woman herself. This misstep really made me miss Giuliana Rancic's awkward yet entertaining and usually all-encompassing questions during her red carpet hosting duties. Come on Menounos, you can and should have done so, so much better.
And, while we're on the topic, be sure to check out Peet's Togetherness, everyone.
