Whitney Houston is just one of those artists who is uncoverable. Like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan — covering any of these artists will just result in a disappointing product, and it's a bit of a travesty that people still try. People other than CHVRCHES, that is, because they just covered Whitney Houston's "It's Not Right, But It's Okay," and they did a pretty amazing job.
The track premiered on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show, which has been hitting it out of the park with awesome content lately — Lowe is the interviewer in that crazy Kanye West interview that Jimmy Kimmel parodied on his show, pissing off Yeezus himself.
The cover itself is classic CHVRCHES, with a mega-synthesized, electronic sound to back Lauren Mayberry's haunting vocals. It helps that CHVRCHES already has a pretty '80s sound in the sense that it's usually super power-electronica, so it fits well with the tone of the song without being too close to the original — Whitney's version was very much a '90s power-pop song.
If you haven't heard of CHVRCHES yet, you should be on the lookout — these guys just released their first album, and their single, "Gun," has been BLOWING UP on the charts. You can check out their cover below.
