Tove Lo's New Single Is Insanely Catchy

by Alex Kritselis

It will be difficult for up-and-coming pop star Tove Lo to recreate the massive success of her breakthrough hit single, "Habits (Stay High)," but I think she's up to challenge. The 27-year-old Swedish singer-songwriter, who released her debut album, Queen of the Clouds, last September, has chosen the insanely catchy (and wonderfully weird) "Talking Body" as her new single — and I think it has the potential to be huge. Much like "Habits" before it, "Talking Body" is chock full of vivid imagery and irresistible pop hooks that can (and will) stick with you for months (believe me, we're talking about a "Call Me Maybe"-level of catchiness here).

In "Habits," Lo sang about loneliness and depression (among other things) with an honesty and intensity that's unusual for pop music. In "Talking Body," she does the same thing with love, sex, and infatuation. It's a song about about hooking up, yes, but more than that, it's about the heavy, intoxicating, and all-encompassing kind of lust that can develop between two people.

On the song's first verse, pre-chorus, and chorus, Lo sings:

Bed, stay in bed

The feeling of your skin locked in my head

Smoke, smoke me broke

I don't care, I'm down for what you want

Day drunk into the night, wanna keep you here

'Cause you dry my tears

Yeah, summer lovin' and fights

How it is for us, and it's all because...

Now if we're talking body?

You got a perfect one, so put it on me

Swear it won't take you long

If you love me right, we f--- for life

On and on and on...

"Talking Body" is astonishingly good. We're just not accustomed to hearing women sing about sex in such a direct and frank manner on the radio today (during the bridge, Lo wails: "Bodies! Oh, baby makin' bodies we just use for fun..."). It's so refreshing. And weird. And catchy! Here's to hoping that the song becomes another hit for the talented newcomer — she certainly deserves it.

"Talking Body" is available on iTunes now.
