How Did Ashton & Mila Get Engaged?

by Lia Beck

With the surprising news coming out that Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis may have gotten married, you might be wondering how these two lovebirds got engaged in the first place. But first, if you haven't heard about the whole secret wedding thing, allow me to explain. Kutcher wished fans a happy new year on Facebook by posting a photo of a message written in sand on the beach. Pretty innocent, right? Well, the message was signed "The Kutchers" which got people wondering if they'd tied the knot. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but this would be a pretty subtle way of sharing the marriage joy without coming out with an official statement or posting on Facebook, "Hey, y'all. We got married."

What we do know, though, is that the actors are planning on getting married at some point. They got engaged in February of 2014 and though they don't share too many details, they are open about their love and have talked about being engaged with the media.

The Black Swan actress told Marie Claire before giving birth to daughter Wyatt, "The best day of my life so far was the proposal. I cried. I was a mess. Not to discredit any relationships in my past, but this relationship is different."

Kunis didn't delve into how Kutcher proposed, but, thankfully for all the celeb gossip lovers out there, some anonymous sources did. An insider told Us Weekly in February 2014 that the proposal was "very sincere and simple," and added, "This was the plan. Once the divorce [from Demi Moore] was final he got it ready and proposed. He knew through most of the time he was trying to get the divorce over with he would propose as soon as it was over." Sounds both sweet and influenced by the legal system!

In addition to this, a source who spoke with People claims that Kutcher asked Kunis' father for her hand in marriage prior to the proposal, saying, "He talked with Mila's dad around Christmastime. He asked for Mark's blessing to marry her. It was important to Ashton to be respectful and traditional. This is the real thing for him and he wants to do it all right."

So, while neither Kutcher nor Kunis posted a cheesy YouTube video showing the entire proposal, we do know that it was likely traditional and not too over-the-top, and we know definitively that it made both of them very happy.
