Frankie's Not The Only One To Rock Body Paint

by Tess Yocom

The AMAs proved to be a night full of T. Swift dancing in the audience and Selena Gomez pulling at all of our heartstrings. But — in case you missed it — Frankie Grande wore a body paint shirt, completely winning the red carpet for the evening. Yep, the former Big Brother houseguest and YouTube personality made quite the statement in his outfit — or, um, lack thereof.

Painting on a white shirt and pink bowtie, Grande wore the ensemble to make fun of everyone wearing formal wear. And, since the AMA’s is a more relaxed and creative awards show, it was the perfect place to try the look out. It’s so detail-oriented! Whatever anyone may think of the outfit, at least he wins for most creative shirt of the night.

Sure, body paint is nothing new. Sports fans have been “painting up” for football games since probably the beginning of athletics. But, as a fashion statement? It might work. It’s been a look on the runway for years, so why not try it on IRL? From old Halloween costumes to an Oscar-winning movie, here are five times the body paint look has completely worked… and why it’s probably hear to stay.

Thank you Frankie, for inspiring us all to stop at the craft store.

2. Topanga's Lipstick

So, it’s technically not body paint…but Toganga Lawrence made the whole “wear makeup in completely different way” cool in this old Boy Meets World episode. Never change, Toganga. Never change.

Oh, the Heidi Klum Halloween party. The supermodel made an appearance at her annual event in 2010 dressed in pink body paint.

I guess Gaga DID try out the trend before Frankie. The singer wore this eye look to the MTV Video Music Aid Japan in 2011. Scary, but cool.
