MerDer fans are in trouble because on Grey's Anatomy Derek and Meredith are probably not getting back together. On Thursday's winter finale, fans learned that Derek is heading to Washington, DC and Meredith was the one who asked him to leave. It looks like this is the nail in the coffin for their relationship because long distance is hard enough when you don't hate your significant other. Although the pair had been having problems all season, on Thursday's episode it all came to a head that ending in a screaming match.
It turns out that Derek is bitter that he had to say no to the President to stay in Seattle with Meredith. "I gave up everything for you!" he shouted at his wife during the heated final exchange. Whoops, not something you should say to the mother of your children. Derek has been super selfish all season, even trying to steal his sister's job. So when the opportunity to reaccept the President's offer conveniently occurred, it's not surprising that Derek agreed.
He never wanted to turn it down, and doing so put a lot of cracks in his marriage. He was mad to lose his dream job and Meredith was mad that he was taking it out on her. So yes, technically she told Derek to finally take the job, but it was just out of anger and frustration. When Derek dialed that phone and accepted the position right in front of her you know she could see everything falling apart then and there.
I wanted to be optimistic that the couple was going to make it despite all the drama, but I have to say this looks like an end. It's hard to come back from that heated of a fight, especially when Derek won't be working in the same hospital as Meredith and will have no incentive to try to work things out.
Besides, the flashback montage of Meredith and Derek meeting that played at the end of the episodehad an air of finality about it. I can't see this relationship going anywhere but down. So much for eternal love, Shonda Rhimes. This is why we can't have nice things.
It's true that Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey are signed on for another season, but don't expect that to mean we'll see a reconciliation. From where I'm standing, the MerDer 'ship looks pretty dead.
