Hilary Duff Gets Honest About Divorce

by Allyson Koerner

She used to be known for her days on Disney Channel's Lizzie McGuire, but more recently Hilary Duff has made headlines for her divorce from retired hockey player Mike Comrie. Dealing with a failed marriage is hard enough, but to go through it publicly is probably a million times harder, especially when a child — Duff is mom to two-year-old Luca — is involved. Imagine all of the backlash you'd receive, which is exactly what Duff and Comrie had to deal with. In this month's Elle Canada, the singer/actress opens up about her divorce in quite the honest manner.

Just how did she handle the negativity? She explains in the magazine,

"I have a good therapist!" she said laughing. "I've dealt with [attention] for such a long time. But some of the bigger struggles that came my way in the past two years — like my separation or when my parents separated — were the first times I had to deal with people knowing about something personal happening to my family. It just felt so invasive and insensitive. It got really gross, and I think part of you gets a bit desensitized. The best way to handle it is by just owning your shit. I'm human and this is what happened. None of us is perfect."

I can't imagine going through divorce, let alone having to be in the spotlight while trying to take care of yourself, your son, your family, and your life.

I think anyone dealing with a similar situation, or those people going through divorce without having to be in the limelight, can relate to Duff. I 100 percent respect her honesty, and her bluntness just made me admire her that much more.
