She Made 'The City' Theme Song We Always Needed
God, don't you just miss watching Whitney Port's trials and tribulations of trying to make it in fashion in New York City? You don't have to answer that, I know you do. On Tuesday, that latest 1989 song, Taylor Swift's "Welcome To New York," was released and, well, it's the perfect anthem for new New Yorkers. And, naturally, it reminded me and my reality TV-loving heart of Whitney, Olivia Palermo (duh), and MTV's The City , which somehow managed to steer clear of a New York-centric song in its opening credits, opting for The Pussycat Dolls' "Top Of The World." Swift's "Welcome To New York" would've been the perfect theme song for this series — well, if it had been released in 2008.
Sure, "Top Of The World" has the "bright lights, long nights" thing going for it and it's about hitting the pavement and not letting a city get the best of you. But this is New York City, we're talking about here — it couldn't hurt to be more specific. Swift's "Welcome To New York" speaks a lot more to Whitney's journey of leaving her comfy SoCal life and making the big change of moving out East to pursue that "something more" in The City.
If you don't believe me, just watch The City's opening credits on mute while "Welcome To New York" plays — or get a visual here:
"Welcome to New York — It's been waiting for you"
"Welcome to New York — Welcome to New York"
"Walking through a crowd — The village is aglow — Kaleidoscope of loud heartbeats — Under coats"
"Everybody here wanted something more — Searching for a sound we hadn’t heard before"
"And it said — Welcome to New York — It's been waiting for you — Welcome to New York"
"It’s a new soundtrack I could dance to this beat, beat — Forevermore"
"The lights are so bright — But they never blind me, me — Welcome to New York"
"It’s been waiting for you — Welcome to New York — Welcome to New York"
"When we first dropped our bags — On apartment floors — Took our broken hearts — Put them in a drawer"
"Everybody here was someone else before"
"Welcome to New York — It's been waiting for you"
"Welcome to New York — Welcome to New York"
You totally get it now, right?
