She Made a Big Change for Breast Cancer Awareness

by Marenah Dobin

As you probably know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, hence the fact that you can buy pink versions of just about every product this month, with proceeds going to various breast cancer awareness and research organizations. There are pink ribbons everywhere and on top of that many celebrities have used their fame for the great cause in a wide variety of ways. For instance, Kate Hudson and her mother Goldie Hawn dyed their hair pink in honor of the cause and documented their new looks in Instagram.

As evidenced by Hudson and Hawn, there are many different ways people can raise awareness and they are not just limited to donating — or dyeing, for that matter. Obviously not all of us can endorse products with sales benefiting charity, but there is something that everyone can do to contribute. If you'd like to follow in the footsteps of your favorite celebrities, it's possible. Celebs have been hosting and attending events, donating money, participating in walks, wearing the color pink, buying pink products, encouraging women to get mammograms, and even sharing stories about their own experiences with breast cancer.

Here are some examples of celebrities who chose to go pink this month:

Kate Hudson & Goldie Hawn

Hudson and her mother Hawn posed for a photo that showed the duo getting their hair dyed pink to honor and support the people in their lives who have been effected by breast cancer. Hudson posted the photo to Instagram and mentioned a list of people, including her grandmother who inspired them to showcase their support.

Khloe & Rob Kardashian

Khloe and Rob Kardashian have been promoting the Athletic Propulsion Labs, APL, initiative to raise funds for breast cancer awareness and research. They have been seen working out in their sneakers and have mentioned the cause on social media. Khloe posted a photo on Instagram and Rob tweeted a photo of the shoes and asked his followers to support the cause

On Oct. 18, Jennifer Garner and Rachel Zoe co-hosted Elyse Walker's 10th annual Pink Party to raise funds for the Women's Cancer Program at the Cedars-Sinai Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute. Both stars spoke about the importance of raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research. There was a fashion show at the event and there were plenty of other stars on hand to lend their support. Guests included Giuliana and Bill Rancic, Shay Mitchell, Molly Sims, and Marcia Cross.

Elizabeth Hurley has been the face of Estée Lauder's breast cancer awareness campaign for 20 years! And has worn an absurd amount of pink dresses to Breast Cancer Awareness month events. Hurley also helps name a new shade of lipstick every year which is sold to raise money for the cause.

In 2009, Christina Applegate, a breast cancer survivor, launched Right Action for Women (RAW), a charitable organization that provides financial help for women to get breast cancer testing and education for women to learn more about the disease. This year, RAW has teamed up with Asics to create a line of pink workout clothes and sneakers, with a minimum pledge of $100,000 donated to the cause.

Giuliana Rancic, a breast cancer survivor, had a special episode of her show called Beyond Candid With Giuliana: Hope, Strength, and Courage. She sat down with fellow survivors Samantha Harris and Amy Robach to share their stories. She also has done a lot this month with her Fab-U-Wish charity which grants wishes to women who are coping with breast cancer. Through Fab-U-Wish, Rancic created partnerships with Nescafé's Coffee-Mate and the Sky Zone trampoline park to give a portions of sales to breast cancer organizations.
