It's no secret that Hollywood's favorite host Neil Patrick Harris is a man of many talents. Between belting out incredible vocals in Broadway's Hedwig and the Angry Inch and starring in the box office sensation Gone Girl, it's surprising NPH even had time to release his very book, let alone agree to host the 2015 Academy Awards. (I'm getting tired just thinking about all of it.) Yet there is one major opportunity the former How I Met Your Mother star let slip by that he now regrets. And believe me when I tell you it was a role to die for. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, it was revealed that NPH and David Burtka almost starred in American Horror Story: Murder House a few years back. (Deep breaths, everyone. Deep breaths.)
So who exactly were they supposed to be? Apparently, Ryan Murphy asked Harris and Burtka to play the bickering, gay couple Chad and Patrick, who become two of the resident ghosts to haunt Murder House's hallowed halls. However, the actors had just got done playing a dysfunctional couple in A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas, so Harris turned it down, thinking that portraying such a similar role so soon would put a stigma on their relationship.
"We had just played ourselves as a couple, not getting along, and I thought, it just seems weird to do that twice, like as individual actors, to play a couple that hates each other twice. It just felt weird. So I said no, that we shouldn’t do it… And then wouldn’t you know, American Horror Story is a big, gigantic success and super awesome.”
Believe me, NPH, we are just as disappointed as you are. Of course, the roles eventually went to Zachary Quinto and Teddy Sears, both of whom did an outstanding job. However, in light of this new information, it's hard not to think about what might have been. Because, let's face it, Harris and Burtka would've been absolutely perfect for the parts. Some may say their performance could've been legen — WAIT FOR IT — dary.
For starters…
They're Great With Children
As many AHS fans know, Chad and Patrick desperately wanted a kid in the hopes it would bring them closer together. They even planned on taking one of Vivien's twins to raise as their own. And given everything that's going on in this photo, that kid would've been surrounded by love.
They Love Halloween
If you recall, Chad was a huge fan of this spooky holiday and loved decorating the house in its Halloween finest each and every year. NPH and Burtka would've totally fit in here, given how much they themselves love this particular holiday. Can you imagine all the awesome Halloween parties they could've thrown? Oh, the possibilities!
Either Would've Rocked That Latex Suit
Let's not forget that Chad was the one to buy the Rubber Man suit in the first place as a way to help spice up their sex life. So if we were to have seen Harris or Burtka walking around in said suit, I'm guessing there wouldn't have been any complaints. At least not from this direction.
Now NPH simply has to guest star on AHS: Freak Show , right? I mean, he just has to. We've waited for his debut long enough.
