All Magic Comes with a Price — Including Hands

by Leah Marilla Thomas

I have good news and bad news, Captain Swan fans. If you thought Emma was too cold toward her pirate suitor, your curses are about to be reversed. In this week's episode of Once Upon A Time , Emma is asking Hook out on a real date. However, according to an official ABC press release, "Hook visits Mr. Gold and asks for his hand to be reattached so that he can embrace her with both hands." Aww, that's so cute! Bless his heart though, because that's a terrible idea. Magic always comes with a price, especially when dealing with Gold. We've had that drummed pretty deep into our pretty little heads by now. Has Killian not been watching this show? Rumplestiltskin is not exactly what I would call a forgiving guy, and he is Hook's "crocodile." Plus, Rumple's wife Milah ran away to be with Hook. I don't think Rumple is going to make it easy on Hook's latest lady love.

Also, how do we think Emma is going to react to this news? Even though having a boyfriend without a sharp metal hook for a hand may be preferable for her love life, I doubt she's going to take it well. She's made her fair share of deals in the past, but only as a last resort. Besides habitually swiping at things and forgetting he has two opposable thumbs now, what are the possible outcomes for Hook here?

Hook will owe Rumplestiltskin a "favor"

Those always end well. Of course, this is the logical price that Hook will have to pay. If Rumplestiltskin doesn't know what he wants from someone just yet, he leaves his deals open-ended by demanding favors "TBA." That's not a terrible business strategy. You have to admire a man who is able to improvise. However, with their history, there's no way the Dark One doesn't already have some dastardly plan in mind.

The hand will do Rumple's bidding

Is this like going to be like Dr. Strangelove, or Peter Pettigrew's silver hand in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows? What if Rumplestiltskin can now control Killian Jones's new hand using his dagger? Which, let us not forget, Belle still believes she has in her own possession. I don't know what Rumple is after or what his business is with The Sorcerer's Apprentice , but having Hook as a pawn does not bode well for anyone in Storybrooke. How are the villains going to get happy endings if they keep turning on one another?

Stranger-hand danger! If Hook's new digits start working against him, any number of bad things could happen. He could try to harm himself. He could start a fight. He could get framed for a crime. He could trip on his unlaced boots. He could write a mean note! The possibilities are endless.

He'll lose another body part in its place

Hey! Get your minds out of the gutter. But seriously. These deals are all about the details and the syntax. What if he just asked for one hand, so he loses the other? What if he loses a foot instead, or an eyeball? Be careful what you wish for. Captain Eyepatch and Captain Peg Leg aren't anywhere near as catchy as Captain Hook.
