How to Pair Wine With Your Halloween Candy

by Lucia Peters

I can’t say that it ever occurred to me to pair wine with Halloween candy, but you know what? It actually sounds like a pretty good idea. What better way to put a grown-up spin on your favorite seasonal treats — and without any pumpkin spice nonsense at that? Your Halloween candy of choice might say an unexpected amount about who you are as a person, but, well… Let’s just say that it’s a whole new ballgame when you add your favorite wine on top of it.

Created by the folks behind wine app Vivino, the infographic seen here offers a friendly way to match your trick or treat haul (or, y’know, the results of your last trip to Target) with an appropriate wine. As you might expect, the fruity candies tend to pair better with white wines, while chocolate-y treats work better with reds — but this infographic doesn’t just leave it at that. Oh no. It takes the idea to a whole new level by pairing specific sweets with a range of wine types beyond simply red or white.

Got a dry white on hand like sauvignon blanc or pinot grigio? Have some Skittles with it. More into rich whites, like chardonnay or voignier? Candy corn or Butterfingers are your best bet. Sparkling wines pair well with things ranging from Kit Kats to Nerds, but you might also match that wafer-y chocolate bar with a malbec or another bold red. As for dessert wines, you’ve got a lot of options depending on whether you’re into red or white; if you’re a port fan, though, munch on a Tootsie Roll while sipping it. Who knew it would be such a magical match?

Sour Patch Kids, unfortunately, don’t seem to pair well with anything, so you might be better off enjoying their pucker goodness raw and unadulterated; but on the other hand, at least there’s one candy option that goes with pretty much everything: Hershey bars. Sweet whites, rich whites, medium reds, and bold reds will all stand you in good stead with a bowlful of Hershey’s miniatures, so gather your friends and have a party. It’ll totally be worth it.

Vivino, by the way, is a pretty snazzy little app; if you typically don’t have a clue about what wines go with which foods, it takes all the guesswork out of it for you. All you have to do is snap a picture of whatever you’ve got available and it’ll tell you everything you need to know about it.
