It's not very often that a movie comes out not only detailing the complexities of a relationship between longtime female friends, but also doesn't make the basis of all their conversations solely focused on a male romantic interest. So, color me so excited after watching the first trailer for Life Partners , which looks like it does all that and more — with the bonus of underrated-but-fabulous actresses Leighton Meester and Gillian Jacobs in the starring roles.
The film, which also stars Meester's real-life husband Adam Brody, focuses on the friendship between longtime buddies and roommates, 29-year-old Sasha (Meester) and Paige (Jacobs). Both have pretty much avoided dating in favor of spending all of their free time with one another, but all of that changes when Paige meets Tim (Brody), and the two grow serious enough about one another to marry. Sasha, on the other hand, still only casually dates women — and their friendship begins to grow apart as Paige spends more and more time with Tim, despite Sasha's attempts to keep things the same as they used to be.
From the looks of the trailer, the performances are raw and compelling — and even better, the story is honest. Growing up can mean drifting apart from people you used to be close to, and, while sometimes you find your way back, it doesn't always work out that way. Plus, it's great to see the inclusion of a lesbian character (Meester's Sasha) as lead, because, as we all know, that is not something we see in movies frequently enough.
Check out the trailer below. Life Partners will be released on video on demand Nov. 6, and in theaters on Dec. 5.
