These Are the Collaborations of the Future

by Rikki Byrd

Lena Dunham x Nasty Gal, Alexander Wang x H&M, Kerry Washington x Express, Altuzurra x Target, Sophia Chang x Puma. Collaborations are inevitably in right now, bringing some of culture's top influencers into the fashion industry to create timeless and memorable items that sometimes have people waiting outside in lines. And the infamous "x" between clothing retailers and houses and noted designers and celebrities goes beyond fashion. Collaborations are all over from the music industry (Kendrick Lamar x Imagine Dragons at the Grammy's) to television shows (The Simpsons x Family Guy) and even at the Oscars (Pizza x Ellen anyone?). Collaborations are smart, clever, and if done the right way, effective, helping brands either keep their air of cool or revitalize it; and I'm completely obsessed with the idea. Here are the collaborations I wish would happen.

1. Tavi Gevinson x ModCloth

The Tavi Gevinson x ModCloth collection would capture the peculiarity of Gevinson: her explorations through young adulthood and odes to her favorite style icons. Peter pan collars and floor-sweeping floral dresses would dominate this collection, along with graphic tees bearing images from albums in her coveted vinyl collections and posters of her idols.

2. Jaden and Willow Smith x Supreme

The Smith-siblings collabo would reign Supreme among the skaters and street kids. Featuring all unisex items, the collection would feature fitted baseball caps, graphic tees and stickers with clever phrases. Jaden will design an exclusive skateboard that will sell for a ridiculous price and Willow will create some badass hooded jackets.

3. Emma Watson x J Crew

Working closely with Jenna Lyons, Watson will help create a soft, feminine collection that empowers women. The collection will include inseparable separates that can be worn in a way that a woman finds most fitting for her style. Matching pants and jackets, sweatshirts and sweatpants, will come in five basic colors, perfect for mixing and matching. It will also feature men's and women's tees with her campaign title "HeforShe."

4. Erykah Badu and Pharrell x Vivienne Westwood

Prepare for a shortage on felt when these two powerful musicians collide. Under the direction of Vivienne Westwood, Pharrell and Erykah Badu will create a collection of head gear that will take you to new heights. The infamous hats that they wear will be sold exclusively, and the collection itself will feature more ready-to-wear hats, such as bowl hats, bucket hats and newsboy hats.

5. Lorde x Urban Outfitters

Lorde's collaboration with UO will feature flirty drop-waist dresses and skirts in natural tone colors to complement her fade-to-black style. She'll also have a cosmetics line in the store for a limited time that will include blood-red lipstick, eyeliners and mascaras. An assortment of tights and socks will also be available.

6. Janelle Monaé x Clarks

It's imperative that Janelle Monaé is able to do the mashed potato when she performs, which is why we always catch her in a pair of oxfords, loafers, brogues or boots. The Janelle Monaé x Clarks collection will feature a collection of black and white lace-up shoes and boots reminiscent of the songstresses' iconic uniformed style. The mens and women's shoes will have a padded insert for comfort on those electric nights when you want to "get way down."
