Got a secret, can you keep it? Halloween is coming up. OK, it's not a huge secret — no need to take this one to the grave. I just wanted to get you in the spirit for this ah-mazing costume idea for your friend group: Pretty Little Liars Halloween costumes. It's especially appropriate, since the show is known for its Halloween specials. Plus, every friend group has an Ali DiLaurentis in it. Let her take charge and assign out the costumes.
The best part of this idea is that there's something for everyone. You can channel your inner Aria Montgomery — aka cheetah print everything — or prep it up, just like Spencer Hastings. Now that we know Ali is alive, that even adds a fifth costume spot. If you tried to dress up as them last year? Nope, only four options, and one friend would've been totally left out. And if you're part of a group of six besties, just have the other friend wear a black hoodie and follow you around. Duh, they can be A!
Now let's break down the ways that you can make Spencer, Aria, Emily, Hanna, and Ali costumes. Pretty much all you have to do is add one or two of these affordable pieces to your wardrobe! You won't have to pull a Hanna Marin and shoplift from your local mall. That would be a little too far when it comes to getting into character.
Aria Montgomery
She's my personal fave when it comes to outfits. You can wear anything with an animal print or animal face, and you'll be all set.
Need an excuse to buy cheetah print leggings? This is it! These are from a place called OnlyLeggings.com, which sounds like a wonderful website to me.
I could also see Aria wearing this H&M skirt:
Ms. Montgomery is notorious for mixing patterns. This cropped sweater from Forever 21 will do!
Oh, and you can't forget the obnoxiously large earrings, like this pair. Those are a staple for her!
Tips: Go crazy mixing patterns! Especially if they're animal print. Pair together anything you wouldn't think would match. Aria is bold and it somehow works.
Spencer Hastings
Spence is the ultimate prepster. Sometimes she wears trench coats, but who wants to wear one of those on Halloween? Here are some better suggestions.
This skirt from Nordstrom looks like it came right out of Hasting's closet. Plus, you can totally re-use it by wearing it to work or your internship.
Then add a dressy, collared shirt. Try somewhere like J Crew.
Or maybe even a classy cardi, like this one from Target.
Don't forget to have loose waves in your hair, just like Spencer. Use this handy tutorial to get it just right:
Tips: Unlike Aria, Spencer doesn't mix as many patterns. Don't buy all of the above items and wear them at once. Instead, choose one and mix with other classic pieces you already own!
Hanna Marin
Hanna has gotten way more edgy lately in her crusade to be the anti-Ali. That means this look is way more grungy than it would've been two seasons ago.
This sweater looks cozy, but the dark pattern is very Hanna.
Pair your sweater with a pair of distressed jean shorts, like these from H&M.
And don't forget tights that are ripped... on purpose!
Add black streaks to your hair using a spray dye like this one from Party City. (Bonus: It costs less than $3!)
Spray Dye, $4, Party City
Tips: Try to find dark colors, funky patterns, and edgy leggings. No one will ever mistake you for Ali! If you're feeling especially Hanna-esque, carry around a flask.
Emily Fields
Technically you could just wear a one-piece bathing suit. But since the other girls are wearing actual outfits, here are some options of how to become Rosewood's favorite athlete.
I could definitely see Emily wearing a plaid tank top like this one.
Or a cool denim vest:
Em would totally rock cargo pants, like this pair.
Oh, and she's also a big fan of scarfs. Like this one that's literally from the PLL collection at Aeropostale. (If you want to cheat, you can just buy all your outfits there!)
Tips: Emily is definitely the sporty one in the group, but she's still stylish. You can wear something casual, yet chic.
Alison DiLaurentis
Thank goodness Ali is back! Didn't you miss her perfect curls? Even when she was on the run, her hair looked flawless. (Could she even shower? Did she have a curling iron? These are among the infinite unanswered PLL questions.)
In order to be Ali, throw on a tank top.
If you want to go for her most famous outfit (aka she wore when she disappeared), wear a yellow one!
And add a green military jacket:
The most important part of Ali? Like I said before, her perfect blonde curls. Luckily, there's a tutorial for that!
Tips: Whoever is Alison must be the sassiest in personality. She's the ringleader after all. You can also throw on a statement necklace and cute pair of flats.
With these costumes, you won't be getting any mean texts from A. Besides to tell you how jealous she (or he?) is of how greAt you all look!
