Could These 'Friends' Quotes Be Any More Basic?

by Tanya Ghahremani

We all love Friends, but let's face it: Some of its most well-known quotes (as in, the ones still exchanged in daily conversation, or referred to in casual discussion about the series) are totally and utterly basic. Of course, there's no problem with that — if anything, it sort of speaks to the show's genuine and amazing impact on popular culture that even now, 10 years after its series finale aired on NBC, basic bitches all around the world are still making lobster analogies when talking about love, and joking that they've experienced the "pivot, pivot!" moment when referencing NYC living (this is no joke, by the way — have you ever tried to carry a couch up a six floor walk-up building? Friends understood.)

What makes a quote basic, you ask? Simple: Everyone knows them, even simple, casual viewers of the sitcom, so they're slightly overplayed in their excellence. Everyone knows the "Smelly Cat" song, and everyone knows Janice's signature "Oh my God," And therefore they are the most obvious choices when referencing the series. They're so great, they're universally recognized as being from Friends.

So, of course, in honor of the show's 10-year anniversary, I did my part and put together the most basic of the basic Friends quotes for your referencing guide. You're welcome.

"He's her lobster!"

"Pivot!"

"How you doin'?"

"Gum would be perfection."

"We were on a break!"

"Look at me, I'm Chandler! Could I be wearing any more clothes?"

"Smelly cat, smelly cat, what are they feeding you?"

"Oh. My. God."

"Joey doesn't share food!"

"I'm not great at the advice. Could I interest you in a sarcastic comment?"
