Nicki's Wardrobe Malfunction Stole The Show

by Christine DiStasio

Well, that's one way to start a show, I suppose. After a lead-in that included Ariana Grande's "Break Free" and Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda," the first-ever live performance of "Bang Bang" took the stage at the VMAs with a HUGE distraction. Yep, you saw it too — Nicki Minaj performed "Bang Bang"... through a wardrobe malfunction while singing alongside Jessie J and Ariana Grande at the 2014 Video Music Awards. And, well, while it was a great performance (bow down to Jessie J, all), Minaj clutching the front of her dress stole the show. Bang bang into the room is right.

So, sorry to Grande and Jessie J, but it was impossible to not pay attention to Minaj's quick-change error over the actual vocals during the performance. Especially if you sat on the edge of your seat, assuming that Minaj was planning something sneaky. (My first guess, considering Jessie J's wardrobe-malfunction-waiting-to-happen dress with side-slits and Ariana Grande's itty-bitty bodysuit.) But, nope, Minaj's open-front dress was absolutely not on purpose. At all. And it showed and took all of the attention away from the fact that it was actually a pretty great first-time-ever performance of everyone's favorite jam.

Honestly, it's kind of hard to remember anything else about the performance other than Minaj uncomfortably clutching her dress and trying to sing into a mic that was clearly haphazardly attached to the side of her head before she ran on stage. Sadly.

But hey, Jessie J's opening notes were pretty great.
