Ariana Grande's VMA Look Is Only Half-Unexpected

by Miki Hayes

Although this is only her second time attending MTV's Video Music Awards, Ariana Grande is in for a big night. Between opening the show and having her new album, My Everything, drop at midnight, all eyes will be on the pint-sized superstar. But these are not the only reasons. Grande showed up to the VMAs in a black, leather mini-dress with matching thigh-high, stiletto boots. Of course she accessorized with her signature, high pony.

Her choice of attire is not surprising considering her recent music videos. "Problem" features the petite, powerhouse vocalist in some retro, 1960's mod. The video is littered with black and white color-blocking, patent leather, knee-highs, and big hair.

Grande's second single, "Break Free," takes on a different generation while still adhering to her throwback theme. The video features Grande in some 1930's galactic-fantasy-fashion a la Flash Gordon. She kept the white, stiletto knee-highs, but this time threw in a geometric leotard, mirrored bustier, and white face-tats.

And while Grande decided to hold on to her recent costume-y vibes with her over-the-knee boots and monochromatic theme, she updated the look for the carpet with gold, zipper embellishments giving the look a more biker-chic vibe.

Things sure have changed for the ex-Nickelodeon star who made her VMA debut as a pre-show performer in girly glitter and curls.
