Rashida Jones Is Totally Fashion's Unsung Heroine

by Amy Sciarretto

Actress and funny girl Rashida Jones is totally an unsung heroine in the fashion world. The Parks and Rec star's style is cute and can't-look-away-from and she recently demonstrated her unique fashion eye by wearing a leather-on-leather outfit, known as an "Italian tux," paired with athletic trainers, to an event. It was totally unconventional, but left me thinking, "Wow, she somehow nailed that." Her style is so effortlessly, beautifully, and accidentally disheveled, like a messier, cooler version of Zooey Deschanel. Jones has written feminist essays and she is a Glamour columnist, and while her quick wit is certainly her most endearing point, I think it's about time her style was celebrated as well.

Miss Jones is not a trendsetter or a well-known rule breaker like, say, Rihanna. She doesn’t get that kind of recognition, but her quirky, imperfect ensembles are so inspiring and should turn more heads.

She reminds us that brainy, funny girls can play with fashion just as effectively as the overtly sexy ones and that it's not always some sort of happy accident, like, "Oh, look at Rashida! She got it right this time!" Being stylish doesn't have to equal being unintelligent.

Jones, who went to Harvard and who become my girl crush for role as a sorry, not sorry workaholic who loses the love of her life in Celeste and Jesse Forever , has had her moments on the red carpet and off. These are the key elements that have made her a style unsung heroine.

1. Her Simple Bangs That Work

While the aforementioned Deschanel is pretty much the patron saint of bangs, Jones rocks simple, not-too-heavy, not-too-blunt fringe that bring out her amazing eyes.

2. Her Sexy Librarian Looks

This ensemble is indicative of Jones' style, which is falls under that "sexy librarian" category. It's stylish and she's covered up, but the shiny top, tucked into her long skirt, and ankle strap heels worked together to give off mysterious sexiness.

3. Her Confidence With Metallics

Jones confidence allowed her to mix leather in her aforementioned Italian tux. This metallic ensemble isn't easy to pull off, but topping it with a cropped blazer was the right move.

4. Her Version of Old Hollywood Glam

At the 2014 Met Gala, Jones' soft lavender gown was lovely on her, but her take on Old Hollywood glam hair and makeup was more memorable. The red lips, thick waves, and deep side part showed off her pretty face. Matte red lips are another of her hallmarks, and suit her well.

5. Her Nerdy Black Specs

Jones is often seen sporting nerdy black glasses, which make her even sexier. Her heart-shaped face means she can wear any type of specs and they don't overwhelm her face.

6. Her Deftness With Accessories

Jones took a basic, dark pants outfit and turned it up with dazzling accessories. Without the blingy, statement necklace, the booties, or the clutch, this would be a total snooze and fashion Ambien.

7. Her Ability To Mix Prints

Mixing prints was a "don't" in fashion for so long and while it's now accepted as a hard and fast "do," not everyone does it right. Jones' mix of prints here was playful and bold, and included a red bag that perfectly complimented her bright lip.

8. Her Effortless Bedhead

It might take a glam squad to assist some starlets in achieving perfectly effortless bedhead. Some might spend hundreds on making their hair look like they didn't spend hundreds on it. Jones' messy bedhead always falls around her face like it's meant to.

9. Her Fearlessness

A graphic print dress can often come off as cartoonish, caricature-like, or trying too hard, like Miley Cyrus' Tupac and Biggie "dress" at the 2013 EMAs. Jones' dress is a graphic novel come to life and the image is so large it could compete with its wearer, but she totally pulls it off.

10. Her Not Basic Bitchness

An LBD or a black cape or a black coat is always a basic, but Jones is anything but a basic bitch in all black. The tasteful cleavage, the swingy, flirty hem, and those chunky, somewhat '90s heels with an ankle strap eliminated any "basicosity." I think I just made up a word.

11. Her Fresh Takes On Leather

Okay, so I mentioned the Italian tux twice already, but Jones has a serious handle on leather. She wears the fabric, one of my personal faves, in unconventional ways. This open bodice dress belongs in my closet; maybe she can bequeath it to me. The white, dicky-ish blouse and the cut of the romper were another take on sexy and smart, flawlessly executed by Rashida Jones. My one wish is that she'd Instagram more often. She rarely posts photos, but I want to see more of her personal street style. Maybe she'll see this and be inspired to start IG'ing more. #HopingAndWishing.
