Taylor Swift's"Shake It Off" Lyrics Decoded

Taylor Swift's new single "Shake It Off" is all kinds of self-referential. She talks about her haters, her critics, her serial dating habits, and how she doesn't care what people say about her because she's going to "shake it off". Swift never really explains what shaking in off entails, but I guess it has a lot to do with solo dance parties and baking her feelings. The song basically calls out all the people who have ever said anything negative about Swift and her awkward dancing, seeming inability to stay in a relationship, and her problematic opinions on feminism. She wants us to know that she's cool being the only one dancing at the award show, and she doesn't care if anyone makes fun of her, because she knows she's awkward and wants to own it. She's just gonna bake, bake, bake, bake, bake.

You do you, Taylor Swift. We hear you loud and clear.

What isn't clear, though, is who exactly these "people" are that she mentions repeatedly in the song lyrics who, according to her, have had not-so-nice things to say about her. Swift has never been afraid of naming names, so it's odd she wouldn't come right out and say who she's talking about, but I've done some investigating, and the results are in. So, who are these "people", and what exactly did they say about Swift?

Let's break it down:

“I stay out too late, got nothing in my brain”

Actually, I don't think anyone has ever actually suggested that Taylor Swift stays out too late or parties too hard. If anything, she's a hardcore homebody and grandma-in-training.

“I go on too many dates, but I can’t make them stay"

That was Tina Fey.

"I'm dancing on my own, I make the moves up as I go"

I'm going to have to disagree with her on this one, too. Pretty much everyone who knows that Taylor Swift exists also knows about her awkward dancing because she's the one that talks about it.

"My ex-man brought his new girlfriend, and she's like, 'Oh my God'"

Who said "Oh my God"? It definitely could've been Camilla Belle. Or Paige Reifler. Or Alyssa Miller. Depends on which "ex-man" she's talking about, which is hard to say because she has A LOT.

"'Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play"

This is probably a direct quote from her ex-boyfriend John "Sexual Napalm" Mayer.
