9 Things to Never Say to a Taylor Swift Fan
It's been a long, hard road for us Taylor Swift fans. We've experienced the full gamut of emotions — elation, disappointment, confusion, pride, anger, indifference. But, as difficult as it is to be a fan of someone for the better part of your adolescence and newly adult life, it's also good to know that it's worth it. When I first heard T. Swift strum a chord on "Teardrops on My Guitar," back in '06, there was no going back. Somehow, this curly-haired, prom dress-wearing girl who sang and played guitar on her bed had captured the exact emotions of my poor 15-year-old heart. And, one way or another, Swift keeps on doing it. Not just for me, but for the millions of die hard fans she has around the world.
We know that Swift a skilled lyricist and musician, but she's also simply a good person. And because of that, any fan of Swift knows that the infatuation with her almost has more to do with her gentle nature than her music. Not because her music isn't totally relatable and heartfelt, but because it's hard to believe that a human being can indeed be that well-rounded. She's been known to visit sick children in the hospital, she drops mysterious and prolific comments on various fans' Instagram accounts in order to give them some support and inspiration, and she even goes to fans' bridal showers for the hell of it. But, far better than that, the singer has an unforeseen, self-deprecating, and wry sense of humor that's completely endearing, and she also names her cats after superheroes like the incomparable Olivia Benson of Law & Order SVU.
So, yeah, she's perfect.
But, like anyone, Swift faces the haters, too. (Yes, other than Kanye.) And, to be a fan of someone so genuine and watch them get dissed quite unfairly, takes a toll on even the most level-headed human. So, in order to not have a Taylor Swift fan riot on your hands, here are some things you should never say to a T. Swift fan:
"SHE'S CUTESY AND ANNOYING."
That the best you got?
"YOU DO KNOW SHE'S NOT ACTUALLY SINGING ABOUT YOUR LIFE?"
Oh, I'm sorry, do you have unlimited access into her brain? If not, SHUT IT.
"HERE SHE GOES AGAIN, WRITING ABOUT ANOTHER EX-BOYFRIEND"
Don't even get me started. FIND ME A MUSICIAN WHO HASN'T WRITTEN ABOUT THEIR EX. That's right, you can't.
"HER SONGS ALL SOUND THE SAME."
DO YOU EVEN HAVE EARS?!
"HOW MANY BEST FRIENDS CAN SHE REALLY HAVE?"
An infinite amount. What's it to you?
FOLLOWED BY "YOU KNOW YOU'RE NOT ONE OF THEM, RIGHT?"
Again, you know nothing.
"UGH, WHO HASN'T SHE DATED?"
The right guy, that's who.
"SHE CAN'T BE THAT SURPRISED WHEN SHE WINS AN AWARD."
Oh, she can't be? Maybe unlike the rest of Hollywood she's truly humble. *Drops mic*
"IDK, SHE'S LIKE, TOO NICE."
Too nice? Would you rather her punch you in the face? Would you like me to punch you in the face?
Before you say something bad about Taylor, don't.
