'American Idol' Finalist Michael Johns Dead at 35

In a sad and sudden twist, American Idol s eason seven finalist Michael Johns has died. He was only 35 years old. Our thoughts go out to his friends and family in this difficult time. Johns, who made it into the top eight of the seventh season of American Idol, died at a friend's apartment on Aug 1. According to TMZ the cause of death was a blod clot in his ankle. Reports say he'd gone to a doctor to check out "unusual bruising and swelling," only to be sent home after examination. Both Fox and Johns' family have released statements regarding his death.

Our family is devastated by the passing of our beloved Michael, a wonderful husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend. We appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from all corners of the globe. Please keep Michael in your thoughts and respect our need to grieve privately in this difficult time.

From Fox:

Michael Johns was an incredible talent and we are deeply saddened by the news of his passing. He was a part of our American Idol family and he will be truly missed. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.

Johns told People in 2008: "All you can ask for as a singer and an artist is just a chance — just a fair shot of showing America or the world that I can sing and I've got something to say."
