What Can We Expect From The First 'Mockingjay?'
Let the Hunger Games freakout commence! The first official teaser trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is here. It's been forever since Catching Fire blew our minds (not to mention totally killed it at the box office), and it's about time that we got a peek at what we can expect from the newest installment in the dystopian series. The new trailer proves that Mockingjay Part 1 will be as epic as expected. While we may not see much of our beloved Katniss Everdeen in the teaser, we do see a lot of the rebellion that our reluctant heroine sparked when she sent that bolt of electricity into the air, effectively ending the Hunger Games forever.
The underlying theme of the Hunger Games series is the rebellion and the price one pays for it, which is exactly what Mockingjay Part 1 explores in the teaser trailer. President Snow declares that the Mockingjay symbol is forbidden and unleashes his high-tech soldiers onto the rebellious masses of Panem, ready to squish the rebellion as he sees fit. Katniss looks at the destruction and declares that she will fight to save Panem, even as the District 13 leader, President Alma Coin, expresses her concern with Katniss as a symbol for their rebellion.
For fans who have read the Hunger Games books, these images will feel familiar. However, in Suzanne Collins' series, Mockingjay is a single story — it's not broken up into two parts like the filmmakers chose for the movie series. There will be certain things from Mockingjay that we will see in Mockingjay Part 1, and others that we'll have to wait just a little bit longer for. Here's what we will most likely see in the first part of Mockingjay.
Gale's Rebellion
The previous Hunger Games films paid little attention to Gale, Katniss' friend and maybe-love interest, but Mockingjay may give Gale a bigger role to play. In the book, Gale becomes a prominent member of the rebellion, and falls in line with President Coin's anti-Capitol attitude and ideas about retribution. Gale's descent into loyalty to Coin and to District 13 will most likely play out in the first film, as Gale's newfound identity is a major part of Katniss' struggle with the rebellion.
Peeta's Betrayal of the Capitol
Peeta is captured by the Capitol at the end of Catching Fire. He exposes a Capitol threat against District 13, which leads the Capitol to punish Peeta by "hijacking" him with tracker jacker venom and causing him to react violently towards Katniss — the ultimate punishment for Peeta. The first Mockingjay film may show Peeta suffering through the Capitol's punishment, but perhaps his therapy will be saved for the second part.
The Propos
In Mockingjay, Katniss is coerced into making propaganda films for the rebellion, something that makes her recognize just how similar the rebellion and the Capitol really are to one another. It's one of the first major signs that Katniss is involved in a rebellion far more dangerous than she expected.
The Death of a Major Character
Prim's death is a major catalyst for Katniss to question everything about the rebellion — specifically the intentions of its leader, President Coin. It would make sense for Prim's death to be the end point of Mockingjay Part 1, as after Prim's death, Katniss makes a decision about how to move forward with her own part in the rebellion.
Of course, we'll have to find out for sure where the movies cuts off when The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 hits theaters Nov. 21.
