Does He Really Love 'Fifty Shades of Grey'?

by Mallory Schlossberg

Remember back when Charlie Hunnam bailed on Fifty Shades of Grey, leaving the title role of the BDSM-loving corporate executive in the very able and attractive hands of Jamie Dornan? Well, Hunnam is now saying that leaving the movie was absolutely devastating because Fifty Shades is totally stellar. In fact, according to the Associated Press, Hunnam went so far to say that leaving the movie "was pretty heartbreaking." Okay, Hunnam, can we call your bluff, or are you really, really into Fifty Shades?

But the Sons of Anarchy star went on to defend the flick at the Television Critics Association press tour. He said:

I'm just really excited to see it. I was just really, really invested and wanted to work with [director] Sam [Taylor-Johnson] and play that character. I'm really, really curious.

I'm also really curious... to see how a movie about sex is done without any actual sex. It's porn for your mind!

Hunnam went on to say all sorts of delightful things about the source material, including that E.L. James' novel is more than "mommy porn," proving that he is, indeed, pro-BDSM-lite book club material:

I think people really do that book a disservice when they reduce it to that type of talk [...] What [E.L. James] actually created is a really sophisticated dynamic and presented it in a package which was accessible to people who normally would be terrified of that subject [...] Actually what she did was pretty brilliant..

Charlie Hunnam: Erotica Advocate. So why did he leave the movie if he's so into the "brilliant" source material? He says "scheduling reasons." Hmmm. Anastasia Steele's Inner Goddess has yet to comment on that one.
